need help with sneaky situation....

Gee, I sure am glad for the district that I work in. I planned our fall trip during a school week, so I will be missing 4 days of work. Two of them should be covered by personal days, and the other two...???, who knows?? Nothing will really be said by our administration. I couldn't imagine having such a hard time with one class period. :confused3 I would just be honest, though. They might be more understanding that you think.

As far as the HIPAA laws go, we can ask for a doctor's note, but it can't be specific. Just something that says, "Jane Doe was in the office from 2 pm until 3:45 pm."

Could you plan a dental cleaning that day or something? Maybe two hours or so before the end of the school day...

I can relate. What I have always found is that honesty really IS the best policy. Do you have any comp time ( for a late running meeting, IEP, etc.) that you could cash in?

I have had a situation happen like that to me on a few occasions. I have booked a late flight on NWA out of DTW only to have it moved to an earlier one. My principal understood and even took my class for about 20 minutes one day so I could leave when my DH came to pick me up.

Doesn't your school system offer personal leave? Just ask for it. Iwork for one of the largest school systems in the country, in the office that disciplines employee's (someone has to do it) for not following policies and regulations.. Do not lie to your administrator, just ask for personal leave. A trip to WDW is not worth jeapordizing your reputation and your career.

Believe me you are not the first to ask for leave, nor the last. Just put in the request several weeks ahead so the administration has planning time.

With all the other stress of teaching I don't think I could handle that too!! We cover for each other, esp. on Friday afternoon, whenever needed. Our admin. usually appreciates that we schedule appointments at a convienient time and cover each other. I left early when we went in Nov. and everyone was great about it. Good luck! I hope all goes well for you. Have a great time!!

You do have a second line of defense, the "flat tire rule" although airlines sporadically don't observe it. Go to the airport after work and if you just miss your plane chances are they'll simply put you on the next plane.

But ... If it was DS at the convenience store instead of you at the school, make it perfectly clear well in advance that at the end of his shift (not before) off he goes even if his relief hasn't arrived yet. Or he takes that entire day off.

For those who mentioned bringing a doctor's note for sick days, does that mean that EVERY time you call in sick, you have to go to the doctor for a note? How about those days when you wake up and just feel like "crud"? Those days don't require a doctor's visit. I would be mad if I had to spend $ to get an excuse from the doctor. Whatever happened to teachers being treated like professionals?

We just call in to the system's sub line and it arranges for us to have a sub. No call to the principal or anyone (Although, I still call him or the secretary as a courtesy)

I like the idea of the "family situation" . That's being vague, while still being truthful. Just say there's something family oriented that you must take care of before you leave town. (they don't have to know that your family situation is making sure you're packed and ready before your flight, lol) If pressed, say that it's personal, but must be dealt with before you fly out. If possible, before going to the administration, I'd arrange for another teacher to cover my class. That way, you can let the Prin. or VPrin. know that everything's taken care of, so there should be no reason to say No.

I posted about a doctor's note. It was only when the sick day was the day before or after a holiday and it was when my mom taught in Michigan where there is a union. We only really have a "teacher's club" here in Iowa ;) I'm not sure how much power they really have. I have called in sick once the day after winter break a long time ago and I was never asked for a doctor's note.
