Need help with Photoshop elements

I normally choose another layer style (like bevel) and apply that first to my text. When you do this, you will get a sun like shape on the layer. Double click on the sun and a menu will come up. At the bottom of the menu is stroke, that means outline. From there, you can choose color and width, etc. Then if you do not want the bevel, unclick the bevel box before clicking OK.

I hope this helps!

OK, I have PSE and I know where the bevels part is but I don't get any kind of sun shape on the layer and I cannot find it :sad1: Where else can I look???

Check the Edit menu. If not there look around on the other menus for Stroke. If all else fails use the help function and search for "stroke".

I know this is going to sound silly but...
Are you applying the bevel to the text layer?

After you have hit "apply" - there should be a little icon that shows up on the text layer. Unless they have changed this (I use the 5.0 version).

Or like Dom13 said - if you look under the Edit Menu - there is a stroke option there as well. I normally only use this one to outline the whole design and use the one in the layer styles to outline individual pieces of my design. Did that make sense?

ok i don't know what i am doing can you help me from scratch or am I asking to much if so I understand. Thanks

Amy-
I to am having trouble outlining text after I insert it into a picture. Your previous post in reference to appling this effect was helpful, but in your disigns you have a black outline around the text to emphasize and make it easier to read. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do that.:confused3
I read your post about applying a bevel to the text layer and then going to edit and look for stroke or outline, but it is not available in the edit menu. You said that when you do it, a sun appears in the layer, unfortunately my version is 6.0 not 5 so there is not sun so I am totally lost.
:scared: I make sure to select the text layer, but in the edit menu stroke/outline is grey and not available it keeps saying simplify but if you simplify it you cannot edit. Please help!:worship: If there is anyway you could help I would be soo grateful!!!

OK ladies here we go -- in photoshop:
1. Create text layer.
2. Type text.
3. Right click on layer on the right where the layers are listed with their thumbnails.
4. Choose blending options.
5. Put a check mark in the "stroke" box.
6. Default color is red.
7. Keeping the options open, click on the word stroke to highlight it.
8. This takes you to that effect's options.
9. Click on the red box to change the color.
10. If you hover over your picture, you will see a dropper. Click with it to choose a color within your picture.
11. You can also change the size of the outline.

I recommend trying each effect by checking each one individually and watching how it changes your text. There are a lot of cool things you can do! Hope this helps.

Joanna,
Thanks for your help with this - there must be quite a difference between 5.0 and 6.0 in this respect. I am anxious to know if this works for all of you who have asked for help. Please let us know.

I don't have elements, just Photoshop CS3. My sister had the newest download of Elements, and it seemed to work basically the exact same way. Hm. Hope my directions are even mildly right. lol.

You can also click on your text layer, click edit, and choose stroke, and pick your options from there. I prefer to do it with all the other layer effects though like I described.

Has anyone tried my steps? Did they help? If not... sorry, I tried. :goodvibes

In my version, PS Elements 4.0, you cannot Stroke (outline) an editable text layer, you must simplify it first. On my effects menu there are 3 outline options on the effects tab, bold, medium and thin. These do the same thing but they only leave the outline, the letters are transparent. Using that method I have to go back and fill in the letters if that is what I want. That way works well for creating a mask for putting pictures inside the letters. After using the effect simply fill the outside with a different color leaving the letters transparent.

If you want the letters to be editable duplicate the layer before you simplify. This way you can play with the first layer and if you've gone past the point you can undo it you can start over on the duplicate layer. Duplicate it again so you have another editable copy.

Amy,
I can do the texted but i can not out line it IDK

If your version has changed, this may not work but try this (step by step):

1) Type in sample text on new layer

2) Then under Special Effects, under layer styles - there are many choices, like bevel, drop shadow, inner glow, etc. This is where I choose "bevel" and pick one of the bevel options and click "Apply"

3) Now on the text layer (in the layers palette) where it has the T and your sample text mine now has a sun type symbol on the layer on the far right. (I am not sure if your version has this or not)

4) Double click on the sun symbol and a menu will pop up. In this menu will be all the layer styles like bevel, etc. On the bottom, you will find stroke. Put a check mark in the box and your text will outline with the default color - minie is red. From there you can change the color, the width and the opacity.

Like Dom13 said, you can also find stroke in the Edit menu at the top of the screen. I choose not to use this for text because you do have to simplify the layer first (which means you cannot edit it). So be sure if you go this route, you duplicate the text layer first so you have an editable layer in the future (as Dom13 said).

I hope this works for you this time! If not, the program must have changed too much for me to be helpful.
