I am in need of some help with my website. I recieved an email from Geocities that said my site has been exceeding it's bandwidth and if it continues, my site will keep being shut down. What am I supose to do? If anyone can help, please tell me how I can prevent this. Thanks.

It seems that your site is just a bit too popular for the host that you have. I'm assuming that you are using the free site that is provided by Geocities.

Every time someone looks at your site, it uses up "bandwidth". They only have so much of it to share around between all the people that have web sites on their systems. Usually, each month or even each day, you are allowed so much of that bandwidth. It isn't just the number of times a page is view but it also considers that amount of information on the page that is viewed. A page with just some text on it will probably use up less bandwidth than a page with a lot of images on it, for example.

The free sites, or even some of the sites you pay for, limit the amount of information that people can retrieve from your site on a daily or monthly basis. If you exceed that, they will shut you down, sometimes just until the next day or the beginning of the next month. If you continue to exceed the limits, they might shut you down all together.

The solutions are to move your pages to another site that will allow a higher bandwidth usage or to reduce the number of hits on your site. With the link in your signature, I'm sure a lot of people hit it. If you pulled it from there and any other places that you have the link displayed, it will certainly reduce the number of hits.

Here's my delema: I don't want to move it from Geocitie because I use their Pagebuilder program to create it. Is there any way I can keep it on Geocities and reduce the bandwidth?

I would try to eliminate any images that you can. The other thing is to work on the images you do have. For example, the castle you have on the first page show about 20K bytes in size. I copied it, compressed it some and stored as a .jpg and the same image, same size is 5K bytes. The more images and the larger the file size of those images, the faster your bandwidth will be gobbled up.

Would it also help to have fewer graphics on one page? If this is the case, can I have more, shorter pages with fewer pictures insteed of large pages with many pictures? Would this help any?

How big is the colorsofthewind.midi file that you have embedded? That could be a lot of your bandwidth right there.

I have no idea. Do you think I should take it off? I get a ton of complaints about the music anyway.

It would help only if people didn't go to all the pages. With the underlying code on each page, if you spread the images out over more pages and people still go to all the pages, it will actually use a little bit more by loading more pages. There is a little overhead associated with each page according to how it is coded.

There is a trade off between getting a lot on a page so that people don't have to navigate to a lot of different pages and the time it takes to load a page. People will loose interest if it takes too long to load a page.

Do you have that file stored on your computer somewhere that you can look at the size of it? If people are complaining, I know it would save bandwidth and download times to get rid of it.

Actually, it is only about 10K bytes but that is 10K bytes that you can probably do without.

If a lot of people go to the Finale from Fantasmic page, that midi file is 40K bytes each hit.

I've only had about 10 hits on the Fantasmic midi in the past three months and even fewer for Golden Dreams. Do you think it would be best to remove all music alltogether?

Also, if I can have the images smaller and then have links to the larger versions of the pictures, would that help?

Putting thumbnails in would help as long as you don't have a lot of people clicking to see the larger images. I'd get rid of music all together if it was my site but that's just me.

I'll get rid of the music. Too many complaints and it it takes up too much room. Do you think that would make a frastic improvment or should I do more?

I'd also do as much as you can to reduce either the number or file size of the images. Make sure, if you make thumbnails that you actually reduce the file size and not just the display size in height and width.

If you can get statistic from Geocities, keep track of the changes and see if it reduces the bytes transferred from your site. Remember it could just be reduced hits for a while during the holidays so track it for a while.

Thanks for all your help. I'll try your sugestions. Thanks again. :)

Hey Meeko,I've been getting that email for the last six months. They don't do anything to your site. It's more of a ploy to get you to buy webspace.I wouldn't worry too much.

I was wondering if that's what it was. Thanks for telling me. Still, my website could use a little updating anyway. I'll still try some things that BobBrazeal sugested and see how I like them.
