Need help with iron on t-shirt

I want to make someone a personalized T-Shirt for Christmas, designing it on my computer, printing the design, and ironing it on the shirt.

Here is my problem.

I bought the paper yesterday and did the project. The problem is the whole paper irons onto the shirt, not just the design I printed on the shirt.

Is there a paper available that only transfers the design I print, and not the white backround of the paper?

Not sure on this , but what if you took either scissors or an exacto knife and cut around the design of the transfer?
