hi everyone-----was considering buying the canon S3-----i've never had a digital camera before but would like to get a decent camera--i take good care of them, so i usually have them for a long time---point being that i want something that wont be outdated in the next year-----will this camera be ok for a novice??? will only be using it for family, trips etc, but i love scrapbooking----and some of my friends pictures are just not the same as my old camera with film. Any suggestions/web site would be great! Thanks

My new Canon A610 arrived this weekend and I love it - it gets great reviews and it seems as if a lot of people say the picture quality on the A610/A620 is actually better than the S2. I really wanted the S2 for the 12x zoom and the IS but with all the great reviews I read about the A6x0 series I went with that plus it's much smaller which is convenient for traveling (I also needed an underwater housing and Canon doesn't make one for the S2). I have no regrets about not getting the S2 although if the price drops significantly in the coming months due to the release of the S3 I might snag one and sell my Kodak that has 10x zoom. I sent my brother, who's a fairly advanced photographer, a macro picture that I took with the camera and he was pretty impressed with the macro capabilities.

Go to dpreview.com for camera reviews...it was a great resource for me. You can do side by side comparisons and there's also a forum where you could post this same question. I spent a couple of weeks researching and I finally bought the 610 for $218 from buydig.com on Thursday afternoon, free shipping, no tax and it was delivered on Saturday (and their website said 8-10 delivery!!). Not that I'm trying to sway you from the S3 but I just wanted to give you another option. :)

Good luck!!

Also take a look at these two:

Panasonic fz30 35-420 12x zoom with hot shoe, manual zoom and focus. also auto focus.

Panasonic TZ1 30-350 10x zoom. It is suppose to have a new processor in it that will reduce noise. Dimensions (H x W x D) 2.29'' x 4.41'' x 1.58''

Weight 0.52 lbs

This one hits the streets this month.

I have owned mostly Canons but these two have caught my eye. Was ready to seriously go shopping for one but my PC bit the dust and I had to use the camera money for a new one.

Unlike Kodak, I don't see any glaring badness with Panasonic. I still prefer Canon for their natural-looking colour rendition, though. Oh and their low ISO noise.

Hey - I just got the Canon 610 this weekend too! (great sale at best buy!) -
but looks like you got a better buy!

I love it - I also have a Nikon 5700 - but I wanted more compact camera that I could take anywhere -

Read a lot of reviews on this camera and so far, really happy with the picture quality and the ease of use of the camera -

Karen
