I'm driving from Albany NY to ACY (long drive I know-but we are meeting friends). I'm trying to figure out the best route. According to MapQuest, I can either go one of two ways.

Once I get off the NJ exit 15 of the Thruway I have 2 choices:

1. Take Garden State Parkway S, then exit 38A toward Camden Philadelphia to Atlantic City Expressway W

or

2. Merge onto State Route 17/NJ-17S via exit 66 towards Mahwah, to US highway 46 exit 157 toward NJ 20, take NJ 21 towards Newark

I'm just wondering if one is better than the other traffic-wise? The first route is shorter by 25 minutes according to MapQuest, but I don't trust their knowledge of rush hour traffic.

I'd go with #1.

Another thing you could look at is to pick up I-287 off the Thruway and follow that all the way to the Garden State Parkway near Perth Amboy. (I think I-287 turns into NJ-440 a little before the Parkway, but its continuous)

Thanks-I'll go check that out on MapQuest right now. I don't trust my GPS to pick the right way sometimes.

I live in the NYC area in NJ. Your best bet is the Garden State Parkway straight down. You really don't want to drive through Newark on Rt 21. Rt 17 gets loaded with traffic and some portions have stop lights.

The 287 Route is good but it regularly backs up at rush hour.

If I was driving I would take the Parkway. It's highway all the way down. I also like it's straight through only 1 exit to the AC Expressway (only 1 chance to miss an exit as opposed to many different roads)

Sorry if it's long but I thought you would want info from someone who lives in the area.

Unless you are driving on a peak traffic time (rush hours or say a Saturday morning in summer when shore traffic is heavy), the Garden State Parkway should work and puts you very near the airport.

I live in South Jersey and travel out of ACY all the time. Unless you are leaving at 6:00pm on a Friday in July and August, the Garden State Parkway is the best route hands down.
