I know you helped me in the past and I would love it if you could do it again. My DD returned from camp and uploaded her pictures from her camera to her laptop, then deleted them. Well right after her computer crashed and she lost everything. I thought I read here once that there is someway to retrieve your pictures from a deleted memory card. If so please help, if not thanks for looking. Gina

almost every time. Do not use the card, obviously.
search for recovery software, there are pretty good free programs.

You should also set aside the crashed computer quickly since it may be possible to recover the pictures from it -- provided you did not try to fix the computer first in a manner that re-used or otherwise overwrote the hard disk drive.

If the hard drive is not the part that crashed, stuff can often be recovered quite easily using a different computer*. Otherwise special software and possibly the services of a specialist are needed.

Better yet for this day and age -- Own more memory cards so you don't have to re-use memory cards until you not only copy the pictures to a computer but also copy the pictures from the computer to CD's. For really valuable pictures, it's a good idea to have them in at least three different places, which could mean extra copies of CD's.

* Preferably using the same or newer operating system, such as Windows XP or Windows Vista.

I would second this thought... unless you heard a grinding noise from your hard drive its unlikely you've completely lost the files. The first step would be to open up the computer and take out the hard drive... then go buy a external enclosure for the hard drive to plop the drive in so you can hook it up to a running computer.

Also if your hard drive appears to be the problem.. don't give up just yet... put the computer in a sealed back and then put it in your freezer over night. The next day plug it into your running computer and try to access it again... you have to leave it sealed in the bag, otherwise you risk the cold hard drive sweating and then it would be toast... but often a hard drive that is starting to fail can be put on life support for a few hours by freezing it... it worked for me on a laptop drive once... but shortly afterwards the drive completely gave up the ghost... so if you do it make sure you copy the stuff quickly.
