Need help with costume for class play

I have to come up with a pair of knickers for my 9y/o DS to wear in his class play (a musical version of The Pied Piper). I'd prefer to convert something he already has rather than buy or make them (I can sew, but just don't want to.....). Do any of you creative folks out there have any quick and easy ideas?

I'd take an old pair of cordoroy pants, cut them off at the knees, and pin in some elastic to make a temporary hem. That and a pair of long Arqyle socks ought to do the trick.

If you don't want to cut off any pants, I'd take a pair of knit pants, put soccer socks over the bottom of the legs, and then blouse the pants down a bit a knicker level.

Does he have any of those pants that zip off below the knee?
We had to make a colonial costume, I used those pants, zipped off the bottoms and ran a piece of elastic thru the hem, sewed the elastic together on each hem and there you have..knickers.

Thanks for the replies! I just found a pair of his "church'" pants that are too short for him (he's had a recent growth spurt!). I'm going to cut them off and go from there.

The knickers are finished and look just fine. I even made him some suspenders from gross-grain ribbon and some mitten-clip things. He looks very "fairy tale-ish!"

DS's play was this past Wednesday, and his costume was super! There are three 4th grade classes and each one did it's own performance. Of all the "children" in all the classes, my DS had the absolute BEST and most "in character" costume (am I bragging too much?)! Even the drama teacher said that his was exactly what she had in mind for this part!
