Here is the recipe:

Colcannon

The recipe says to steam the potatos. What is that? Is that different then boiling??? HELP!!!

mmm looks good. I don't suppose you have a steamer?????? a rice steamer???? That is how I steam my veggies. Hope someone can come to your rescue. If not, i'd boil em.

Well, I have a veggie steamer, but it won't hold 3 lbs. of potatos. I may have to end up boiling them.......

Steaming potatoes is different. Steamed is like steamed vegetables. My stove top steamer consist of a pan that has a collandar type container that fits into it. Water is put into the pan, just enough that when the collandar is put into it water does not go through the collandar. The vegetables go into the collandar. Then the lid on the pan. When the water boils the steam then cooks the vegetables. They also have a microwave type, mine is still in the box from when we married almost 9 yrs ago.

Do you have any kind of steamer basket? If so , then put some water in the bottom of the pan, then the basket, then the potatoes. cover and boil. Keep an eye on the water level so it doesnt go dry.

If you dont have one then I think boiling them with skin would be fine.

Or you can peel and boil then mash with butter and milk.

They dont have to be steamed, youa re just making mashed potatoes.

Just use a big pan and put something on the bottom to hold them off of it.. If you can fit a colander in that's perfect.

That's what I thought. Thanks for all the help so quickly everyone.

The difference is that in steaming them the are not sitting directly in the water & don't get soggy & the vitamins etc don't leech into the water. If you don't have a steamer or a metal colander that you can sit over boiling water, I'd suggest nuking them instead. It's really fast & they won't get soggy. You could quasi-steam them by putting them in a glass casserole & covering with plastic wrap to nuke - don't add water. That would hold the steam in & make them more moist.

Good luck!

This is going to sound bizarre - my DH steams them in a crock pot. I can't ask him how he does it, because he's out of town. (And anytime my DH does anything in the kitchen - I try not to "learn" the task.)

How'd it come out? Sounds delicious!
