Hi,
I have flown many many times but For the first time, I just got a message in my account from Southwest stating that we may have possible delays and or cancellations through Our connection in Atlanta on Friday. I can make a one time change, it looks like a weather system may be coming in later in the day on Fri. Do airlines jump too quickly on this, or should I seriously consider changing my flight to earlier in the day?

Seriously consider. Atlanta is in the path of Winter Storm Helena. You want to be through Atlanta as early in the day on Friday as you can be.

If you have the ability to go earlier I would change my flight. Once flights start getting delayed and cancelled all passengers will be calling trying to get on whatever flights are left or that are available the next day. It's better to get out in front of the bad weather if you can!

Also, remember if your flight gets delayed and you will miss your connection or canceled while you are flying, CALL SW while you are in line for an agent to help you. You will likely get through faster if you call but if not at least you have a spot in line as well.

Yes, stay out of the area on Friday. While the airport will handle any winter weather better than the city it's still the South. We aren't used to it. It will take more time to deal with than airports used to regular snow.

jump on it. there may be no options left if you stop to ask....when traveling in winter I stalk the sites for this reason. the faster you jump, the better off you'll be.

Airlines take weather systems seriously so you need to act fast to get the best option that will work for your travel needs.
