DS and I were playing outside on his new slide (plastic Fisher Price set) that he got for Christmas. Anyways, somehow he hurt his foot. He didn't cry when it happened. He just went down. Then he started crying for me to pick him up. I picked him up and brought him into the house. I looked at his foot. Its the left one that hurts and the top of it looks bruised. He didn't really cry in pain, but he cried when I put him down. He won't walk on it. (DS is never one to cry from getting hurt. He scraped his forehead up pretty bad this weekend, but I had no idea he did it because he didn't cry. I just saw the blood.)
I called the dr. and they said to put ice on it every 20 min (20 min on and 20 min off) and to give him motrin. So I did this. He didn't really tolerate the ice. He's 2.25 years old. This all happened around 11am. I put him down for a nap at noon. He woke up a few minutes ago and I tried to make him walk. He just started screaming and crying. Since he had only been asleep for an hour and 15 minutes. I put him back to bed and he went back to sleep.

I'm just getting worried that he won't walk on it though.

Update:
DH took DS for x-rays today. His foot is fractured. He have an appointment to see an ortho tomorrow morning. :(

Call the doctor. Then get an appointment asap with a pediatric orthopedic. If they cannot see you today go to the ER. If he can't put any pressure on it then it must hurt an awful lot. I am sure he will be fine but I would not wait around. Go to the doctor. Good luck.

That stinks. I would call your dr. and have them see him. Especially if he can't put any pressure on it.

I would take him in and get it checked out. My son was about 3 when he was walking with my daughter and I down a muddy hill. We all slipped and fell. We were at baseball tryouts for my older son. He cried a little and I held him. We had a friend that was an emt, he checked it and we both thought that he had twisted his ankle and he'd be fine after a while. It was raining so I carried him to the car and carried him into the house. He took a nap and when he woke up he got off the couch as usual and fell straight to the ground crying. We took him to the ER and sure enough he had broken his leg!!! He was in a cast for 5 weeks. Didn't let it slow him down though. Learned to ride his bike with the cast within 2 days and by the time they removed it he had worn a nice hole in the bottom of it!!

Don't want to scare you, just sharing my story. I'd go ahead and get it checked out.

I worked for a group of orthos. Is it swollen? If it is there is nothing they can do except what they have already told you until the swelling goes down.(xray won't show anything w/ swelling). As for the ice pack make one for you and one for him and play a game of my turn your turn. And do not place the ice pack directly on his skin use a towel of any kind as a barrier. If you have frozen peas or corn use this and make a game of what is inside. Good luck, I know it is hard. Home with my own DS2.5.:flower3:

Thanks everyone! That's what I was thinking too but I didn't want to overreact.

I called DH. He wants me to wait it out until he gets off of work. So, I guess we will wait and see if it gets better in the next 3 hours.

DS is sitting watching Wall-E right now. He still won't really walk on it. He takes a few steps, then starts crying for me. It doesn't look swollen though, so maybe that's a good sign?:confused3

it could be his afraid that it will hurt. DD got nurse maids elbow on thursday and refused to use her left arm. After a trip to the ER and her doctor we we're told to give her mortin every 6 hours and she'd forget she hurt it and begin to use it again. By sunday she was fine. However, i would recommened going to the doctor because you never know with kids.

The fact the he will not bear weight on it does not necessairly mean that there is something seriously wrong. It may just be sore, and he doesn't like putting weight on it. This happened with my sister once. We were sure herfoot was seriously damaged and it turned out to be nothing. If it were my kid, however, I would take them in for a rule out at the ER just to be sure(my ped does not have xray and would send us there anyway).

This is the reason that I don't know what to do about it. It probably has a 99% chance of being nothing wrong, but what if its not? DH wants me to wait and see what he thinks when he gets home from work if DS has not begun walking on it by then. So, I guess I'll just hang tight for a little bit. Know my luck as of late, its probably broken (I just got a new car about 2 weeks ago and someone backed into it over the weekend and didn't leave any info).

Sorry to hear that!! Well, let us know how it comes out. I'm saying a prayer for you that all will be ok.

UPDATE: DS seems to be doing ok. He started walking on it around 5. He is walking with a limp though. I'm hoping this will be gone by morning. Thanks to everyone with your help!

My grandson, who is also 2.5, did something really similar. We went to visit his cousin, my grandd who is also 2.5 and they were playing together in the playroom. Grandson started to cry and grandd kept saying he fell down and pointing to some cars. We think he stepped on one of the cars and went forward. Long story short, he was fine at the time but later my dd called me and said he wouldn't put weight on the foot. We did got to the dr and they told us to do the same as you, motrin and ice. The next day he would put some weight on it, but preferred to crawl to wherever he wanted to go, so dd made another appointment just in case. It took about five days for him to put full weight on the foot, and in the end the dr had taken x rays and everything that he felt he probably bruised the bottom of his foot enough it was painful. At their age, they won't walk on it more for the 'fear' of the pain than the pain itself. It was scary for me, mainly because I was the one supposed to be watching him! I thought for sure he had broken some bone in his foot stepping on that car.

I do know we kept up with the motrin and let him crawl around, the Ped said he would walk on it again when he was probably not paying attention. Dora came on one day, he started dancing and he never looked back. Hopefully that will be the same in your case! Good luck, and definitely go back to the dr if you are not comfortable. I know in Sebastian's case his foot did not swell or bruise but about the 3rd day we did notice discoloration around the arch, like a bruise.

I would have it looked at anyway. My cousin's little boy fell at the McDonald's playground when he was 2. Cried a little, nothing much, went on playing. The next day complained a little. The next day he couldn't walk on it. Took him to the ER and his leg was fractured. He had a walking cast on for 4 weeks.

Poor little guy! I see you're going to WDW soon. You might want to see if your DS can have a waterproof cast so he can go in the pool. It's also so much easier for baths/showers/etc.

Good luck!

I am so sorry your DS broke his foot. Do you have any updates? I know they sell this cast things that make it waterproof in case he is in a cast for Disney.
