Need help! School supplies list question

So DS (going to be freshman) has on his list...

Narrow ruled theme paper
STraight edge loose-leaf paper


WHAT is narrow ruled theme paper? I would have thought it was loose leaf paper, but that is listed as well. What is it?

I think they just mean "college ruled" loose leaf paper. I don't know why they have it listed two different ways, though...

Maybe they want one pack of college-ruled paper, and one pack of wide-ruled paper, but it is weird that they can't stick to one term or the other (theme paper vs. loose leaf paper) in the same list.

I think they are making sure that thay have a "straight-edged" looseleaf to turn in.

And maybe the narrow rule theme paper is missing the word "notebook" ?

Could "straight-edge" perhaps mean spiral notebooks with perforation on the pages, so that you can tear them off straight, without the "ruffles"?

I'm thinking a call to the teacher might be in order. That list looks to me like they asked each teacher and then combined the lists -- if the description varied it got a separate line.

Narrow ruled just means "college ruled" loose leaf paper (that's what I would do anyway)
And the straight edge one I am guessing they just don't want the notebooks that kids rip out of the spiral books. Maybe send in a notebook with the straight edge pull out option.

If it's "loose leaf" paper it is loose and therefore not in a spiral notebook to be torn out.

What loose leaf paper does not have a straight edge?

You'd think that educators could do better at this.

There are notebooks out there that are not spiral bound and that could possibly be what they are talking about. The fringes from spiral notebooks are a PAIN so I can see where they would not want them. Most notebooks now are perforated so it won't be an issue finding them.

the boneheads in my district came up with a lovely request this year. I was impressed that the various buildings got together to make one list for each grade instead of 8 different building lists. I should have held my praise. They managed to forget to check what was actually available for purchase. this is for 3rd and 4th graders so a total of around 1500 students. and their 3000 frustrated parents.

among other typical items they are to bring 2 2-pocket (no brads) folders in each of the following colors:

red
blue
green
yellow
orange

so far so good...

and 1 70 page wide ruled spiral notebook in each of the following colors

red
blue
green
yellow
orange


sounds great. color coordinated and all. the problem? Not one store in the area sold orange spiral notebooks. I was in Staples and a father was telling me they were getting back from vacation and checked every kmart/walmart/office max/staples/target etc etc along their route through 4 states. No orange spiral notebooks.

Who wants to bet $$$$ with me that next year's list will still be asking for those damm orange spiral notebooks?

Well, calling them boneheads is pretty strong. One would easily assume that orange notebooks and folders would be easily available. I am sure they have had many calls by now. I think the overall idea is great. I am sure they will come up with a substitute plan.

Hey, I'm with you on that orange notebook thing! My DD needs that too, can't find any!

I was going to just send in another color but my DD is a strict rules follower. So I took a piece of bright orange paper and taped it to the front cover. Presto - 1 orange spiral notebook. Cost: cheap. a $.01 spiral notebook from Staples and a sheet of astrobright paper from a giant pack I bought at Costco a couple years ago. The bright paper has come in very handy for various projects/reports.

I refuse to go out and spend big $$$ on fancy school supplies. One year it was a certain size/ounces of glue stick. They were over $2 each and the list asked for 4 and only walgreens had them, and nowhere near the quantity needed for the entire grade. So I sent in a bunch of smaller glue sticks that were much less expensive. Another year it was for plastic folders at over $1 each. I sent in paper folders that were less than $.10 each and told my DD when it falls apart I'll give you another. She took in a new set after Christmas and was just fine.

My dd is using those and was always losing papers.

I was getting older dd off to college and I used the leftovers to organize her stuff in a binder.

Lo and behold, the papers fall out of those plastic folders like they are greased up!

If my other dd loses any more papers, I am making her switch to paper and we will just buy new ones when they rip.

I want to compliment all of you for being so diligent about the supply lists. I was always the kid who showed up for the first week (or more) of school without ANY supplies. Around 6th grade, I realized was a moocher and changed my ways (and my mother's), lol.

I remember her complaining that the teacher wanted "12 packs" of crayons. She had no idea where to find them, they were all sold out already. So I took an 8-pack and told the teacher. She was understanding and said she just didn't want people carrying 96-crayon packages everyday.

My kids are ALWAYS oversupplied days before school starts, even if I don't have a list.

This year, my kids' middle school "suggested" a TI-15 Calculator. I could have just let them mooched, but well...see above, lol. I couldn't find that calculator in a store for anything. Walmart and OfficeMax both had it on their website but not in the store. OfficeMax was sold out online, so I had to order it from Walmart.

I also think the "straight edge" is for notebooks designed to allow pages to be torn out.

I am REALLY surprised that you guys have to do so much shopping. We don't expect children until 5th grade to bring ANYTHING. 6th grade and above we expect them to bring a pen, pencil and a ruler.

Half of them don't even manage that!

Nope - Narrow ruled paper is still the distance between the writing lines, it's just even smaller than college ruled. I haven't seen narrow ruled paper in a long time.

I'm on board with the "bonehead" remark.

1 - who wants to pay shipping for a single spiral notebook
2 - for the ones you listed, on the first you can't specify the color you want. On the second you have to order the pack of 6 to get the one orange.

I think that for ANYTHING that the school requires you to purchase (supplies, clothing, etc) the administrators need to actually go out to LOCAL stores and ensure that it can even be found and purchased in the quantities needed for all students that need them to buy.

It seems ludicrous to have to go to 6 stores to find that one orange spiral notebook when the first five had plenty of spiral notebooks in other colors. It's a colossal waste of resources (time, gasoline). What's wrong with buying whatever color you want and LABELING the notebook appropriately? School teachers can read can't they? They shouldn't need color-coding.

I don't even have kids and think this is just nuts.
