We need some help rooting a Nook Color. Can anyone point me to a website of instructions that have worked for you? We have tried 2 different sites and neither worked. The first one didn't include the Android Marketplace in the Apps and I couldn't figure out how to get it on there. The second site made the nook just come up blank and stall during the boot up.

Thanks,
Maggie

I bought an N2A bootable micro SD card for my son to root his with. It does not void warranty and does it all for you. VERY easy to install.

www.n2acards.com

They sell on amazon with free shipping I think.

We bought an SD card with the root program already on it from ebay. That seems the easiest way to do it. (haven't received it yet)

4 GB was recommended but I went with an 8 GB. They are really not that expensive and it works very well.

My DD9 loves her Nook/Android. She pulls the card loose when booting to use it as a Nook and leaves the card in to use it as an Android tablet. She still wants the iPad but I'm not giving it up, yet.

Thanks! Glad she is enjoying it!!

Why do you need to root it? B&N put out an update a few months ago to updated the NC to have the Android software. Mine updated automatically and I have the Android Marketplace and apps.

I believe you have the barnes and noble app store, not the android market.

I bought mine for my wife as an inexpensive tablet knowing I would run CyanogenMod on it. Having the full android market I can run things like the Kindle app, which is required to check e-books out from my library.

Ahh yes sorry I do have the Android software (that was the upgrade) but I get my apps from the B&N store. I can also check e-books out from my library but don't need the Kindle app to do so.

Hmmm... Would these SD cards work for rooting an HP Touchpad?

The HP runs HP WebOS, not android. HP has released WebOS to the development community as an open source project so I hope to see additional development work with this OS.

The CyanogenMod team is working on a Android port for the HP touchpad, it is currently released as an alpha deployment so not very much works. In the coming months there should be more work on this port since there is a high demand with HP dumping all of the touchpads on the market.

Here is the link for info on CyanogenMod on the HP

Nook 2 Android is simply CyanogenMod 7 running from a card. You can purchase a 16Gb Sandisk Class 4 card for $18 and set it up yourself. The CyanogenMod software is open source and free.

Here are the instructions :

We finally managed to get this to work! Yay! It only took trying it 3 times.

DD is happy because the thing she wanted most was the App Words with Friends.

Are there any "idiot" instructions on the web? I've been trying this for over an hour, and I'm ready to pull my hair out. I can't get past the WinImage step. When I try to save the installer image file to my microSD card, the card doesn't even show as an option. (The card shows up in My Computer though.) :confused3

I'm flying to Puerto Rico in a bit so I won't be around for a while. I am going to dump all of the tips I have for this out here, I hope this helps get you going.

Try using win32diskimager release r15 available here.

https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/0.1/0.1

Also make sure you have your card in an SD adapter and in the SD slot of your computer or in a USB SD reader. You can't use you nook plugged in via USB for this.

If you are on Windows 7 right click on win32diskimager and select run as administrator. You should also make sure any other software accessing the SD card, such as my computer, is closed.

Here is another set of instructions that are more detailed, but they are written for a MAC. It's a good overview of the process though.

One last tip, don't try to flash the google apps zip at the same time as Cyanogenmod. I can't ever get that to work right with this installer. After you have written the image and copied cyanogenmod boot the device up and play with it. Then take the card out and copy the google apps zip file to it and reboot into recovery mode.

To reboot into recovery mode let the nook boot normally with the card in it then from desktop hold power key until a poweroff menu appears, In the poweroff menu choose "reboot", in the next menu choose "recovery" and press "OK". The nook would reboot straight into recovery.

It will install the google apps file in recovery then shut down or reboot.

Can anyone explain the difference between the N2A and the San Disk? Is it worth the extra money? The N2A is about 40.00 dollars on Amazon for 16 GB?
Thanks.

If I root my nook, can i still get to/use the nook reader or whatever it's called? I don't want to purchase any e-books unless I'm sure I can use them on my rooted nook.

Yes. But you have to register the Nook on the Barnes and Noble site BEFORE you root it.

If you do the Android on the SD Card approach to use it as a regular Nook Color just unseat the card and re-boot. My DD9 does this all the time because she has books checked out. She can even swap books with friends now. Little smarty pants.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) Your tip about "run as an administrator" was exactly what I was doing wrong. I'm using Windows Vista, so I didn't think that applied to me.

For anyone else trying this, definitely read the instructions in the links above. Here's another link that I found very helpful since it's written in plain English: http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/nook-color-cm7.html
