I'm looking to book an overnight stay near LAX and am thinking of booking at an on-line site. Anyone done that? With who and how does the confirmation work?
I just used http://travel.priceline.com/ for a one night stay in Houston. Got a 4-star hotel for $95. It lets you choose the area of the city, and then you bid. I bid 60% of the rack rate and got it. They'll show you typical rack rates to use as a guideline. I've also used http://www.hotwire.com/ with success.
When you're done, it will give you a confirmation page. I usually call the hotel after a few days to make sure they got the ressie. Take your paperwork with you just in case. The on-line booking agent should have their phone number on there also in case of problems.
I have really loved all the information on bidding from the site www.betterbidding.com - they tell you how to bid for priceline and hotwire, apparently hotwire and hotels.com are owned by the same, so often you can figure out the hotels from hotels.com!!
(bid on a 3 star here in town for this weekend -- $42, their website has $129 web fares listed!!)
