My daughter is sick. She had 103.7 temp a little while ago 2 hours after giving her children's motrin. (She's 7). I put her in the tub and got it down to 100.4 and gave her some tylenol as the dr. has told me before that I can give tylenol and ibuprofen at the same time. Well, as soon as I gave her the tylenol she threw up and now I don't know whether I can give it to her again or not. I've tried calling her pediatrician but his answering service number has been busy for an hour. I had her there yesterday (Friday) and he looked her over and diagnosed her as having a virus that would pass. She's supposed to go to camp for the first time on Monday and is heartbroken and feeling badly. If anyone has been in this situation before, or any nurses in the house, please advise me if I can give her more tylenol or if I have to wait 4 hours even though I know she probably threw it all up. Her fever is on it's way back up. Thanks I know this isn't the best place to ask for medical advice but I don't know what to do at this point and thought maybe someone else had been in the same situation.
Thanks

I have been in the same situation with my 7 yo son many times, as he has cyclic vomiting syndrome with temps of 104 every time he's ill. If he throws up immediately after getting a dose of meds, I give half a dose immediately just in case some was absorbed, to be on the safe side. Continue placing a cool washcloth on her forehead and neck. Put her back in a tepid bath if you feel it's necessary. Strip off her clothes except panties and a tee shirt and cover her with a sheet and light blanket. That's my "mom who's been there" advice.

My "professional nursing student" advice would be to call a 24 hour pharmacy (many Walgreens and CVS are open 24 hours) and ask the pharmacist. That way you will get a professional opinion. Either way, I hope she feels better soon!!!

Wish I could help... not sure.

How to fight your child's fever
by Jennifer Trachtenberg

If your child has a fever, it's natural to feel worried. Find out what you can do to make him or her more comfortable, and how you know when it's time to call the doctor
Fever is, by and large, the most common concern of patients who visit a doctor's surgery. It is not a disease and usually is not harmful. In fact, it's one of the body's defence mechanisms designed to fight off infections. So think of fever as helpful, not harmful, and you will be less anxious when your child has a febrile illness. Here's what you should do when your child has a fever:

First rule: only treat a fever if the child looks or feels ill. Many viruses cause high fevers that are not bothersome. In such cases, just let the body do its work.
No studies demonstrate that treatment of fever decreases the incidence of febrile (high-temperature) seizures/fits. However if your child is lethargic, listless or irritable, treatment is suggested.
Standard medical treatment includes fever reducers such as paracetamol/panadol or Calpol every four hours, or ibuprofen every six hours. The dosage of this depends on the child's weight and not on his or her age, and it is not recommended if your child's weight is below 7kg. Although these medicines are available over-the-counter, if they're not used properly, serious side effects can occur, such as gastrointestinal bleeding or liver toxicity. So it's usually best to consult a doctor if you are unsure about the dosage, or even whether to use it at all.
If the fever is very high - higher than 105°F/41°C - sponging with tepid (not cold) water will help lower it. However, when sponging is used as the only treatment, the body temperature quickly returns to its previous level. Using an electric fan also helps to reduce the temperature. Thus the combination of sponging and antipyretics therapy may result in more rapid fever reduction than if either treatment were used by itself.
If you've tried these methods and your child still appears to be very sick, or if the fever has persisted, then contact with your doctor is definitely in order.

Thank you both. I don't know why I didn't think to call a pharmacist. I'm doing that now.

Hydrate her, water, pedialyte, gatorade. Do you have Advil for children? or any Tylenol Suppositories? If she has a virus (as diagnosed by the MD, that might be the reason why she is vomiting).
Do not cover her, her body needs to cool down, keep her hydrated, and if she is not tolerating medicine by mouth try the Tylenol suppositories. Advil worked well for my kids.(If you decide to give her a suppository, ask the pharmacist what dosage/strenght is the adequate one, know how much your daughter weights, this will be helpful in determining the dosage. Cool compresses may also help, and Pedialyte comes in popsicles, so she might like that better.

Hope she gets well soon

I used to call 1 800 ask a nurse, not sure if they are around anymore.... but I have nurse MIL a personal ask a nurse lol

Hydrate is key. Make sure small sips as to not upset her belly.

Wouldn't you know it, we don't have a 24 hour pharmacy in Panama City. I wish I did have tylenol suppositories...she hates tylenol. I have been giving her Advil for the past 3 days. Her fever just got really bad tonight. And she is so looking forward to going to Camp for the first time Monday. I don't know if she'll be able to go or not. Poor baby. She keeps saying, "I'm sorry, Mommy, I'm sorry!" It just breaks my heart. Her temp is below 100 now, so I'm going to wait and not give her the tylenol until 4:30 if I can hold off. Looks like a long night for me. She's so worth it, though. My little angel. That's her in the picture on the left.

Hope she's feeling better and can make it to camp in the morning :goodvibes

:grouphug: I hope that your DD is feeling better today! :goodvibes
