I am in the beginning stages of planning a trip to DL with a flight onto Honolulu in June/July of 2005 (I like to plan ahead). I have a couple of questions and would like assistance:

1. How far is San Diego from DL? Are there shuttles, or would a rental car be required (I don't think we're up to driving in Calif)? It is worth a trip?

2. Are there are low fare decent airlines out of LAX or Long Beach, etc to Honolulu that could be recommended?

3. What is the weather like in late June?

4. Do you have any tips for someone who knows NOTHING about LAX, DL or Honolulu--good web-sites, etc??

Thanks for any assistance.

I think you might wan't to break up some on these questions into seperate threads ! I bet if you posted the "Honolulu" question on the community board you would get a deluge !

My advice on the planes is to just book on price or timing or where you want to earn points....as all the airlines are fairly eqivilent.

My guess is ATA might be the cheapest since it is a hybred of part public part charter.

I personaly prefer driving but if you can find a bus or shuttle down to San Diego that would be cool. It is nice to just ride sometimes. The drive is about an hour and a half.
You will need at least three days to do a nice tour of Disneyland and DCA. If you don't have that much time to spend, concentrate on the things that are new to you but don't pass up pirates of the Carribean as it is much better than at WDW. :) The weather in June/July can be from the high 70's to the mid 90's with no rain.

If you don't want to drive, consider taking the train from Anaheim to San Diego. Its not too expensive. I can understand not wanting to drive around the Los Angeles area, but the drive to San Diego is rather nice and not too confusing once you get on the 5, which runs right by Disneyland.

I want to second the idea of taking the train ! This is how we did it:

1. Fly into LAX take Airport Bus to DL
2. Takes taxi to anaheim train station
3. In SD call free Hotel shuttle for pick up at station
$. Take hotel shuttle to aiport in SD and fly home

very nice and stress free !

my advice in honolulu, try and make sure your hotel is around the main drag - from about lewers street to ulunia ave and, ideally between the beach and kalakaua ave. The first time we went to honolulu, we weren't in this area and we HATED it, swore we'd never go back, but we did as part of a cruise this year, were in a more central area and loved it - and it certainly wasn't a flashy hotel. Don't know why it made all the difference, but it did. Also, if you're going to rent a car, you can see the whole island in about 2 days, you can get some really cheap deals from the coupon books when you get there - ours was $23 a day, but check your car before you sign - ours was the oldest car on the road and had a family of roaches living in it, other people got a new car for the same price!!!

Where can I learn more about this train? How far is it from La Jolla? Can I catch it in La Jolla and get to DL somehow?

Go to http://www.amtrak.com
The Anaheim station is only 2.5 miles from Disneyland. I'm not sure where the San Diego train station is (there may be more than one) but you can find a list of stations on the website. Its very affordable.

Take a look for flights from John Wayne/Orange County airport (SNA is the code, I think) to Honolulu. It's quite close to DL, with easy access to transportation there. Also, LAX is, in my opinion, one of the airports to be avoided at all costs; I won't say it's a nightmare, but it is the least desireable of all the LA area airports. There are the direct buses to DL, and that would minimize some of the yuckiness! I haven't been to the airport in Long Beach, but I understand it is fine; I think Jet Blue is the primary carrier there right now. Burbank is another good one; it is further than OC by a good bit, but probably not than LAX. United, Southwest, American, and America West all fly out of there.

Weather in late June is highly variable. Last year the last week in June it was quite drizzly most of the week, with temps in the low 70's. The year before it was about 90 and dry (I remember, because my son has been at scout camp that time the last two years!). If I had to guess, and you are really talking about the last week in June, I'd lean toward the estimate of hot; the "June gloom" lasted much longer than usual last year.
