We leave for DW tomorrow and I have a big problem.

After school let out I had a bunion removed and am now all through with most of my recovery and physical therapy. Up until a couple weeks ago my recovery was ahead of schedule so we decided to go to DW for 4 days before we go back to school Sept 1st (I teach high school and dh teaches middle school. We both teach math).

Two weeks ago the weather got very hot and humid and my foot has been swelling occassionally. Doctor says this is normal due to the weather. Now dh wants to get me a wheelchair if I need it. BUt I can still walk and I don't look disabled. I really don't want people to be giving me dirty looks so I am hesitant about the wheelchair. My dsis is telling me not to be stupid but I don't want to have to go back to the stupid shoe so that it looks like I really need it.

Suggestions please?

My suggestion - don't worry about what people think. Go with what is comfortable for you, whether that's a scooter, wheelchair, or something else. You want to enjoy your trip as pain free as possible and that's all that's important.

You're paying a lot of money for your trip. Are you really going to let the possible (and most likely non-existant) opinions of a bunch of strangers that you will never see again in your life make a decision for you regarding the way you tour? For the sake of everybody in your travel party and for the sake of your own comfort/pain, please consider the wheelchair.

Just my opinoin, but I would go with a mobility scooter instead of a wheelchair. We were there last week and it was 90+ everday and I felt sorry for the "pusher" of some of those wheelchairs.
We rented from an outside company as I wanted to be able to go other places with it, but it was the best decision we made concerning our vacation.

Please ask yourself the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

The CM's are used to having people use a wheelchair or ECV because of the huge distances and miles of walking in the parks. The other park guests, well, who cares what they think?

Would you rather go without the extra assistance and get tired and sore after a few hours of walking and standing? Tired & sore can quickly work up to cranky! It does in my family anyway. Then we don't have a good time and the rest of the family has to put up with a cranky mood and frequent rest stops for the remainder of the day. Not a good receipe for a fun day in the parks!

Thanks for all the responses. I just got back last night.

My toe only bothered me last night as we got to the airport.

ON Tuesday I ended up with a blister on the heel of the foot that had been operated on. We got mole skin and bandaids and we made it work. On Thursday as I was walking to the pool to go for a swim I moved wrong and my knee on the other leg went out. I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at the pool and the hotel. I iced the knee and the next morning I was ready to go.

I did make it without the wheelchair but we also took it very slow and relaxed when we could since it was just dh and I.
