Airfare is through the roof and we are now thinking of driving from Long Island to WDW. We would want to stop over 1 night at a decent place. How much would driving cost round trip? We drive a Sonata, which is pretty good on gas. Our flights round trip would cost approximately $950.00 for 3 people :scared1: Can we do better by driving?

No helpers out there today?

I think it would be less, but with gas prices going up the savings are certainly less than they used to be. I believe you can do a gas estimate on mapquest. Just type in your zip code and Lake Buena Vistas.

I am guessing it is around 1000 miles each way. So roughly $150 each way plus a hotel for say $75 each way? So that is about half the price if my numbers make sense.

Hope this helps!

PS. Check out the 2000 mile drivers thread for a ton of info on driving.

Have a great trip!

Thanks HeatherC, we (hubby and I) decided to change our return date and shorten our trip for the time being to avoid the one way $170.00 p/p flight rate. We will still be in WDW for 12 days. I kept my hotel reservations this way if SWA drops their rates, we can simply switch flights. If they don't, we still get to fly and we still have a lengthy vacation.

Your estimates seems logical but I'd have to add in a few meals so it would still be rather costly.

Thanks a bunch! :flower3:

I live in Holbrook and have only driven down once in 2007 so my experience would be of no help in regard to gas prices...sorry....and we drove straight through...with potty/gas/food stops...left about 5am and arrived at the Boardwalk Villas around 10pm

This is how I figured it (each way):

Gas (40 gallons @ $4.00 per gallon) = $160.00
Tolls: $25.80
Hotel: $100
Food: $50
Miscellaneous: $50
Oil change: $25

Total cost each way: $410

Now, you could save on gas if it doesn't reach $4.00 (or it could be much worse). You could also cut down on hotels, miscelllaneous and food. You could also choose to not calculate the cost of an oil change into your planning, but as you are doing an extra 2,300 driving miles, it's prudent to include it....

Based on that, I'd rather fly for the extra $150 total as I think I'd enjoy my vacation more.

You are so right. Even if I were to tweek the cost a bit, it does not seem logical in terms of the time I loose on the road. So, I went ahead and booked some flights for a total of 838.00 for 3 people. I know this is a bit high but it could be worse. Maybe SWA will drop prices and I'll get a credit to use for an "unplanned weekend getaway".

Thanks a bunch!:flower3:
