DD dance recital is next Saturday. This year's costume for one of her acts is an adorable white soft feathery little number with velvet etc. well, the dance instructor wants the girls to wear white anklets with this piece of "soft feathery" stuff put on the anklet around the top. (sorry for the descriptive words but I can't describe it other than soft feathery boa like thingy). Geez, I am so lame..

Anyway, this piece of boa like feathery stuff has to attach to the anklet. I figured okay I will just tac it on with thread and needle no biggie. Well that didn't work cuz then I couldn't get the sock on over my DD foot.

Any advice on how to get this thing on the sock. The material is very soft and feathery - in fact as I work with it, the little white feathery things get all over everything. It basically feels like a cord is holding all of teh little feathery pieces in place so even stitching it on the sock was difficult.....

Any ideas on how to attach this to the sock and still get the sock on her foot and over her heel?

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

can you sew elastic to the feathery thing? make it an anklet so she can get it over her foot?

or what about snaps? a few on the sock and the boa, then just snap it on...that might stay better than elastic, unless you safety pin the elastic to the sock...

I hope this helps...??

good luck!

Ahhhh, the joys of maribou! I am sorry to say that my poor bridesmaids had to wear that around their NECKS! :lmao:

OK, one way to get around it is to literally sew it while it's on the foot. BTDT with my little ballerina! The other way is to stitch it with fairly large stitches done at an angle (up at one spot, then down an inch or so further on). This will give it a little "give". The third option would be to sew velcro tabs to the sock, then velcro to the maribou and hope it stays on.

Sometimes I wonder what dance teachers are thinking when they order these things...my DDs costume this year is AWFUL.

:wizard: pixie dust for you and :cheer2: 'break a leg' to your DD!

I had a similar problem when sewing trim on to sweatshirt cuffs. What I finally did was stretch the cuff around something round but larger -- like a plastic glass -- and then sew the trim on. When you take it off the trim will stretch with the fabric. :thumbsup2

thanks for the suggestions.

I think I am going to try the elastic or velcro. Unfortunately the maribou is already cut and sized for each ankle. I thought about the elastic and that might work. For a 3 minute time frame that she is on stage I think velcro would work too. Might try the Velcro first - good thing I bought more than one pair socks...

I remember having a similar situation years ago with a costume for my daughter. I used velcro. You could also put the sock on her then tack the stuff down so that you know it will fit. That shouldn't take more than a few minutes and for the amount of time she'll be wearing it, you shouldn't have to do a complete job of sewing it down.

Have you asked other mothers what they are doing or did?

The things we do for love! :lovestruc

If you're going to sew it on with elastic, make sure you pucker the boa stuff in between the stitches so that it stretches outs when dd puts it over her foot.

Another suggestion, have the dance instructor who thought of this cute little sock do it for you. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Too cute.

Actually, I decided to try this and it worked - pretty much.

I took a pair of anklets with a lace trim and I took the maribou and tacked it on the lace. Just turned the sock inside out and stitched it on that way. Of course, the maribou the instructer gave us wasn't nearly enough so I had to run to Joanns and get some that is similar but not exact. I figure for the 3 minutes she is on stage it will work. Hopfully it will hold up for rehearsal and two shows.... :confused3

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
