My teacher wants me to send my resume to this lady to send out to different companies. I need to have a cover letter that basically tells the companies what I'm looking for & what applications I'm familiar with.

There are programs that I know like the back of my hand like Photoshop.

There are programs that I have a strong knowledge of like Flash, Illustrator, Director, Authorware, SoundEdit 16, BBedit, Cinema 4D, Infini-D, Premiere & Speedrazor.

And then there are some I have a working knowledge of like Dreamweaver & Maya.

Any suggestions would be helpful. TIA. :)

Your post is kind of confusing... which may be why no response.

Can you clarify... do you need help with the cover letter or the resume itself?

Oh gotcha. I need help with the cover letter itself. I've got the resume ready to go. I already listed the applications in the resume. I wasn't sure how to fill the cover letter though.

(I guess I should run spell checker too ;))

DH hires geeks and he says:

1. Have a cover letter for each position that you are applying for taylored to the position and employer. A generic cover letter looks exactly that - generic. It doesn't adequately display an interest and is unlike to garner any interest from them for you.

2. Illustrate accomplishments with the various applications at different employers to illustrate your various skill sets/levels.

Hope this helps. :)

I would recommend this type of format:

Your name (center your address info)
Address
City, State, Zip Code
Fax number
Phone number

Month, day, year (then begin Left indent here)

Hiring Person
Hiring Person's Job Title
Hiring Person's Company
Street Address
City, State, Zip Code

Dear__________ ,

In the first paragraph of your cover letter, show why they should invite your for an interview. ( ex. I believe my experience and solid record of achievement make me an ideal candidate for an IT or marketing position in your firm.)

In this paragraph, you should highlight your strengths and experience. ( ex. I have over 13 years of professional sales and marketing experience, with a four-year career base established with West Coast Sales. As my enclosed resume indicates, I have successfully managed sales programs in the publishing industry. My experience includes distribution and training, product promotion and development in both the international and domestic markets, and advertising and collateral promotional materials origination.)

The third paragraph of your cover letter opens the door to further communication. ( ex. Please call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx after 6 p.m. if you need further information about my experience.)

Best regards,

Your name goes here

Just don't mention you use MACs. That would be bad.

:D:D:D:D:D

JohnTBap, gonna be in this situation soon too. I'm thinking I should bring some Krispy Kreme donuts for my interviews, think that may give me an 'in'? :D:D:D

As a hiring manager, yes to the KK doughnuts. No to "hitting on" the interviewer.

If asked what your "dream job" is... the answer is "this job."

When asked what your weaknesses are, it is that you are a perfectionist and sometimes... a workaholic.

Don't mention your marital status, children, physical limitations (recent surgeries) etc.

Don't ask when payday is. Don't even mention money until the interviewer brings it up.

I have heard it all... and it never ceases to amaze me what people will tell you in an interview

Good luck!

Actually in this field if I told them I don't know how to use a Mac the next thing they'd do is have a hardy laugh & wish me luck on finding a job. :smooth:

For pugdogs generic letter in the third paragraph in the past have used the last line....
"I look forward to hearing from you."
Puts a positive end to your letter.:D

Good Luck
