Hi
My DH, 29, was/is a carpet installer. He developed a herniated disc at the beginning of June...just woke up one morning with lower back pain and it progressed to sciatica later that week. After a cortisone shot, physical therapy, and nearly 3 months of no work and just resting, he has improved 90%. He could technically go back to work now on lighter duites. His PT has given him the ok to go back to just about all his regular physical activity excpet heavy lifting. The thing is that he doesn't want to ever re-injur his back and he's not 100% comfortable with going back to his old job. He has also heard from co-workers that the company he works for is slowly falling apart. They probably want to go non-union next June with the new contract, which he knew about, but are starting to do some not-so-nice things with that process right now. Some long-time employees have quit and it makes him nervous.
He is not college educated. He only has two years of techical college training for flooring. He is awsome with his hands and with anything math related. He also has fantastic people skills and is a true people person who always connects with his customers and often gets recognition from them for the good job he's done at their home. He was going to be a math teacher at one point, but couldn't afford college and took the flooring job thinking he'd save soem money for a year or two, but when he saw how fast he could climb the ladder in that business and the money he'd be making, he stayed with the company. He was making $50,000+ a year.
Our only two solid ideas now are for him to be a mail carrier and work in pest control. The mail carrier thing would work out if there are any jobs available in our area, which there are not right now. He was all gung ho about it because he really wants to work with people, but then it looks like it is just a waiting game. The pest control thing would be with a local company that will train him. He installed flooring for the owner of the place two years ago and she was so impressed with him that she had him come back and do more rooms and gave him her business card and said if you ever want a career change, come work for us. He called her and she remembered him, but seemed in a hurry and just told him to apply for the open positions. We'll work on that this weekend.
Help! Any other things I'm missing????? We understand he's not going to start out making $50,000 anywhere, but hope for more than minimum wage. I just strated back to school and don't have that much time to surf the net to see what is out there that is legit. I'm a teacher and can carry him on health insurance. We have a decent savings, and we've cut a lot of expenses not knowing his work situation. I know there are a lot of families with one income and it is usually a stay at home mom, but this is reverse...yet we have no kiddos yet! He just wants to get out there and be useful and productive again.
Thanks so much for listening and helping!!!!
