Need help figuring out belt size

I'd post this on Facebook if it weren't for the fact DH is on there as well and I don't want him to see it! He wants a belt for Christmas to replace one of his that is falling apart. Before throwing it out, I took note of the size so I'd know what to get. Here's where the confusion comes in: The printed size on the belt said 36, yet I also measured it from end to end (not including the buckle) and it was 41". When ordering a new belt, should I go by the printed size or the actual size in inches that I measured?

Also, does anyone have any ideas where I can find a selection of men's belts that have interesting, cool patterns? I think we got the belts he liked from Pac Sun, but I haven't been able to find any more from there, and have had trouble in general finding more unusual, non-traditional looking belts. Any suggestions?

I think you're supposed to get 1-2 sizes up. The most widely used method is to buy a belt that is 1-2" larger than your pants size, or as some say: ONE SIZE UP. Example, if you wear a size 36 pants, you would order a size 38 belt.

Measure from first hole to the buckle for actual waist size. 41" sounds about right to allow a little excess to fit in the belt hoop just past the buckle. Keeps the belt end from hanging down. Also keep in mind that since I think belt sizes only can be found in even sizes after a certain size they will also work for someone with a 37" waist.
