Need help deciding horse breeds for Calendar!

Aug is 'Moments' in gold

- I'm drawing a blank here.

Sept is 'Remember' in yellow

- Either a przewalski's horse or a few key early equids/equines from the evolution of horses ( Hyracotherium, Merychippus and the modern equus) or a cavalry horse.

Oct is 'Dream' with blue

- Nothing comes to mind

For either August or October, how about an American Saddlebred? "Dream" seems an appropriate theme, and the blue is represented by a ribbon..

I like the American Mustang for "Remember." It seems they are so forgotten...

I was going to suggest a Quarter Horse too. And maybe a Tennessee Walker.

Since I am partical to quarterhorses-- How about using for dream. Everybody who loves horses knows this breed. I will volunteer a pic of my horse :rotfl2:

I agree, she can paint my quarter horse.;) She'a a beauty.

True, except for the wildly popular Kiger mustangs (remember the movie 'Spirit').

And American Saddlebred might be interesting for Oct.

Doesn't the Pioneer Woman, Bree, live on land with wild horses. It is a preserve and she takes care of them.

She has the most stunning pictures of them on her website. I am not sure if they are mustangs as I don't have a good memory on horse breeds.

But they are free and some of the images of their freedom fit the concept of "dream" in my mind. (free as in their status....I'm not implying the images are free of copyright)

Feb is 'Love' and has a light blue/pink theme

- This one I'm stumped on. I though painting two horses nuzzling or grooming each other would be cute, but I have no idea what breed to go for.

February is prime foaling time. I'd do a dam nuzzling her newborn. Probably a thoroughbred.

April is 'Destiny' and is turquoise and yellow

- Again, a bit stumped, but I thought wither a Quarter Horse or Morgan would fit well here.

I noticed you don't have any Lipizzaners on your list. Perhaps a young one (who would still be grey) and a performing white one doing a capriole or a courbette (had to look that one up).

June is 'Life' in red and yellow

- Again, stumped here. I was thinking perhaps a spanish mustang? Mabye a Kiger mustang or a Nakota horse?

You need some paints. This might be a good place for them.

This is where I'd put the Akhal-Teke!

Oct is 'Dream' with blue

- Nothing comes to mind

Not sure how to handle it, but the first thing that came to my mind were Friesans with blue ribbons entwined in their manes.

Nov is 'Gratitude' in yellow with a bit of blue

- A blank again

A Belgian, Percheron or Clydesdale with harness. Belgians would work best with the yellow.

And finally Dec is 'Believe' in pink.

- Perhaps a mythological horse? Though I would rather do a real breed.

Shetland Pony....with a big red (or pink...duh me) Christmas bow.

I would go with something "flashy" like a Paint, Appaloosa, or American Saddlebred. You can get tack catalogs for reference free.

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions! I think I’ve more or less gt it down. Of course, I cannot add every breed (there are 100’s of horse breeds and only 12 months). So I sort of had to keep it to horses I most wanted to paint. I’ll be working mostly on a complimentary color basis to make the horses ‘pop’. I’m going to avaid painting people, since I want this to focus on the horses.

Jan - Bay Peruvian Paso/Paso Fino in full traditional festival tack (plates, gold accents, tassels and flowers), performing a dancing gait. With the bay I can work in some red and yellow tones to counter all that blue, and perhaps some blue and red accents in the tack to counteract both colors.

Feb - Two Fjords (classic brown dun) grooming each other. The yellow sheen of their dun coating should go perfectly against the light blue. No tack. I will probably do this as a portrait, and give it some intimacy.

March – Red Chestnut Icelandic in a flying pace or tolt. Red goes perfectly with green, but with a chestnut and all that yellow I think I can avoid the Christmas feeling. No tack.

April – Buckskin/dun Morgan, either a full body or half body shot. May work this as a profile shot. The yellow and black should work well against the turquoise, and since black is rarely just black, the blue sheen of the black points will work well with the yellow.

May – Black Arabian, possibly a portrait or have the horse facing 1/3, trotting. No tack, or perhaps an ‘arabian’ halter. Again, the blue and red tones in the black should work dramatically with the purple.

June – Grulla (high chrome) Mustang rearing, ½ body shot. The darker grulla coloring will really pop against the red and yellow.

July – Bay Splash Abaco Barb, a replica of one of the few living members of this breed.

Aug - Palomino Akhal Teke, the one time I would double up on the colors. But here, I should be able to get the golden sheen that akhal tekes have extra emphasis.

Sept – Horse Evolution

Oct – Chestnut Thoroughbred with a blue ribbon, portrait. Again, the red chestnut against the blue would be lovely, and the blue can be mirrored in the ribbon.

Nov –Belgian in Harness, full body shot, maybe 2/3,

Dec – Grey Shetland Pony with a red bow. I dislike pink (it’s really only diluted red. I mean, light blue doesn’t get called a separate color. It bugs me) but I may mirror the pink in the gray.

For the cover I may do a grey Carthasian Andalusian performing a Piaffe or Airs above the ground. The white of the grey would be eyecatching for a cover.

I’m going to start looking for more references. For horses there is a large database of Deviantart stock. Though if anyone has any pictures, I won’t say no. I love pictures! Everyone loves horse pictures! Thank you all again!

I think for October "dream" you should use a big black Friesian. It fits the season and the word dream.

I was also gonna suggest a friesian, we have one & they are just breathtaking!

it would also fit under april.
destiny..
only because there are so ,any movies that use friesians in fantasy/warrior/romatic type themes.

also under dream I could see a clydesdale,, you always see the baby clydesdales dreaming of their future in the budweiser team.
