We leave for WDW on Saturday!

DD15 fractured both ankles in a freak tumbling accident on Thursday night. She is currently in air casts. I want to rent an ECV for her for our trip. (MY DD12 has spina bifida and will be using a wheel chair for all of our park days. I know I will not be able to cope with pushing two wheel chairs in the parks.)

Does anyone have recommendations for a good place to rent an EVC in the Orlando area? How much should I expect to spend for a week's rental?

Also, DD15 is supposed to be returning home two days earlier than the rest of the family. She has to be back to school the day break ends. They are not giving us any slack on the vacation time. Since she is in the casts, I will need to take her to the gate for her flight home. Does anyone have any advice on getting a "gate pass" for the airport in Orlando? (We are flying United.)

TIA for any and all assistance!

Bumping this up--I hope someone can help! You might want to put this on the Community Board also!

I do'nt think any of the local rental places allow rentals for people under 18. You might check with her doctor about getting a power chair for her--often the cost for that will be paid for by the insurance. My brother has one that's a "rental" that his workers comp paid for.

As far as the gate goes, you need to go to the United counter to check her in, and at that point request a gate pass for you. They may or may not grant your request, usually for 15 year olds they don't, but in your DD's case with teh injury, I can't imagine them refusing the request. If they don't grant the request they'll ahve to get a skycap to push her, make sure she's got a few dollars to tip him with.

You can try scootaround and Walker mobility and see what they say about the age question

One of the companies listed on the disABILITIES FAQs thread might make an exception, but in general, they will not rent an ECV for use by someone ender 18.
When we contacted several of the companies to ask about renting a power wheelchair for DD, the first question they asked us was whether or not DD was an experienced powerr wheelchair user. I am not aware of any of the companies that will rent a power wheelchair to someone unless they are experienced. Power wheelchairs are driven with a joystick and do take more practice to drive than an ECV.

Good luck on your trip and hope things go well for you.
