My DH has this awful mishmash of "tools" in his "toolbox". He was saying tonight while it is not the most exciting gift that for birthdays and Father's Day, etc. I can start getting him tools. He said he would go with me to pick out, but mentioned that Craftsman are great tools. I told him that I was pretty sure with a little research (DISboards ;) :rolleyes1 ) I would probably be okay to get somethings started for him.

So....what are must haves for building a good toolbox. Thanks!:)

LISTEN TO YOUR DH! He Knows what he speaks!!!!!

Craftsmen from Sears are the Best & Garenteed for LIFE!!!!!!!:thumbsup2

My DH probably uses his racheting socket set the most. And, he also requested one from Sears.

Believe it or not but a good set of Craftsman screwdrivers area great start. As they are replaceable if stripped or broken.

If he doesn't have a nice toolbox you could start there.

Craftsman sells almost everything in sets to get you started then you can add to them to customize.

my dh swears by Snap-On Tools. you would have to find an independent salesperson, your local car dealership service dept. should be able to tell you who, and they would come to your house your dh could look over what they have, you can by one piece at a time. All tools are guarenteed for life, they will not break.........(ahem they will however sink to the bottom of a lake if dropped..but that is another story)

Is there a list some where of the most useful tools to start out a toolbox? I guess I will head to Sears one night and just kinda start wandering around. THAT should be good for a laugh!:rotfl:

OK...as far as ToolBox, there is a toolbox at Costco that my DH wants. I keep telling him to "go get it"!!! Anyway I digress....

It is an upright toolbox, mainly stainless, well made. Around 800.00. My DH is short and this one fits the bill nicely for him. Alot of toolboxes are way too tall for him.

If you do decide to get him a Craftsman make sure the drawers have the "ball bearings" in them for opening.
Big difference.:thumbsup2

DH uses Duawalt (sp) for his Power Tools...

Does you DH want a rolling tool cart? Something like this?

That $800 one from Costco is nice but it's meant more for mechanics than home owners.

The nice thing about the one I linked to is that it's small but can be used as a work surface.

Personally, I prefer the main tools I use to be in a portable tool box. I don't like the pouch softsides that much. Some tools (like the mechanics tool set of socket wrenches) have their own cases so that's where I keep them.

As someone else suggested, Sears are great tools. Not the best but have a lifetime guarantee. I would say get a nice set of screwdrivers,pliers/wire cutters, a socket set, a open/closed wrench set,an electric outlet checker, a hammer and finally a 19.2 volt drill/driver (try to get the package with two batteries).

At Sears they have mechanic starter tool sets at about 99.00 up to about 1000.00. In these include everything to get you started. Combination Wrenchs, Screwdrivers, Pliers, Chisels, Socket Sets, Rachets ( You should make sure you get a 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, and 3/4 inch rachet).

My dh is a huge tool guy, and his choice is Craftsman. Sounds like your dh also likes Craftsman - so make a trip to Sears! A screwdriver set is always a good place to start. If you aren't sure, ask someone there in the tool department and they'll point you in the right direction. However if you want to get him something a little bigger, and something he'll use often, a Craftsman cordless drill would be a great gift. They start at under $100. It's the most used tool in my dh's man-shed.

DH is a mechanic and swears by Snap-On. However, if you don't know a dealer, your best bet is Craftsman from Sears since you can replace them easily.

Jimmy LOVES getting tools, he thinks its very exciting. LOL

I usually buy him Craftsman--He has a big Snap On ratchet(socket?) set, too, that my dad got him.
Necessities:
set of screwdrivers-he has tons and he uses them all
wrench set
socket wrench set
pliers
hammer

cordless drill-I think he has DeWalt for that one

He has more, but he uses those mostly.

My husband used to work for the company that makes the Sears toolboxes and now works for the company that makes the Sears handtools! It was nice to read all the good comments about both.

You have made our day.

As the wife of a tool addict, I also say Craftsman! Those are the only tools (non power anyway) that my dh will buy. He could spend hours at Sears. He always uses the screwdrivers and loves his wratcheting wrenches. You can always get a Craftsman gift card and let him have a shopping spree. This is what my dh wants for all holiday gifts.

I have to laugh because every time my husband says "Oh, I don't care - you pick it out" we are in trouble. :rotfl: Actually, I spent a lot of time working in scenery shops in college and grad school and later worked for years in the design department of a commercial shop. I know a lot about tools and how to use them. Yet I would still probably get my guy a gift card from Sears or Home Depot. That way he is responsible for the choices, the quality, etc. and he can get what (he thinks) he needs.

By the way, our Kmart is now selling Craftsman as well. I think Sears bought them up.

If you are looking for hand tools, Craftsman are fine. If you are looking for power tools, I would go with a different brand.
