Need gift idea for 1 yr. old

I second the savingsbond. Honestly a 1 year old will never remember this gift but a 10 year old will be happy to spend 50 bucks lol. Just my thoughts.

Color wonder markers/paint-but the paint can be greasy if left unattended-the kid that is!

Look for some outdoor stuff-a bubble thing-the one with batteries that you don't need to blow constantly. A bubble mower.

I would suggest books or a CD - get one with music targeted towards toddlers that isn't obnoxious. Since you do not know the family well, I wouldn't suggest getting toys, since you don't really know what the kid has already. If you do happen to find out....a good toy gift would be a pack of Quatro blocks (jumbo sized legos for toddlers).

Bath stuff! Kids that age are just starting to get too big for the baby towels. They have those cute little animal/monster/dinosaur hooded towels now. Pair it with some 'big' kid bath soap etc. and is a great gift and NOT a toy.

If you do go with the board books and have Costco membership they have great deals on them. Around Christmas they had the 4 packs of small Dr Seuss books for $7.99. I don't think they have those anymore (seasonal) but they always have some single and sets of books that are a great buy. Another really inexpensive toy that babies love are nesting stackers. You can get for as little as $4, but hey also have them with more "cups" or larger cups for a bit more.
