DH just told me we need to bring snacks and veggie/dip to NY for Thanksgiving w/his family. I don't want to do same old onion dip...any ideas for something different that will travel well?

block of cream cheese
Mix in one half jar(or one full jar if you like it more colorful like we do) of
Harry and David's Onion Pepper jam

MMMM! Easy peasy and good.

We do a cream cheese/salsa dip that everyone loves. I dont know how far you are traveling but here is the easy recipe:
1 block cream cheese
jar of salsa
cheddar cheese
soften cream cheese and spread on the bottom of oven/microwave safe dish. pour salsa over the top and top with shredded cheddar cheese. microwave for 3 minutes or bake until cheese is melted. eat with tortilla chips. Easy, good and cheap.

Have you tried spinach dip in a bread bowl? I always use the recipe on the Knorr Vegetable Soup box. If I remember correctly, it's 1 packet of powered Knorr Vegetable Soup, 1 box of frozen spinach (thaw and squeeze out liquid), 1 container of sour cream, chopped water chestnuts. I think there's also about a cup of mayo. I use fat free mayo and fat free sour cream to cut the calories. After you mix it all together, you can serve it in a hollowed out round of sourdough bread. If you're traveling, keep the dip in the cooler and don't put it in the bread round until you get where you're going. You can serve it with cubed sourdough bread (I usually buy an extra loaf in addition to what comes out of the round), crackers or veggies.

This is just a recipe that I made up, I am sure there are others like it, but my family demands I bring this to our functions.

1 package of dry ranch dressing
2 8oz pkgs of cream cheese - light is fine -softened
enough milk to thin it to your liking
1 8oz pkg of shredded cheese

Beat cream cheese and ranch dressing together, add milk to thin, then add in the shredded cheese. You may want to add more milk at this point.

Hmmm...great ideas!! Thank you so much as I've been tearing my hair out and even tried my fav cooks.com to find an idea and nothing sparked an interest!

I want to do one tray of veggies and the other fruit. The veggie tray will have typical dip (onion mix/sour cream) and then I'll do the Hawaiian bread w/spinach dip in the middle.
In the fruit tray I'll do strawberry fluff dip in the middle w/apples, bananas, and grapes.

Thanks so much. Would love more ideas for my upcoming Christmas party though! lol

I have a couple.

Salsa w/cream cheese:
1 block Cream Cheese, softened
1 jar of salsa
Put the whole block of cream cheese in a shallow dish, then pour the salsa over the top. Enjoy.

Ranch Dip
1 block cream cheese, softened
1 packet Hidden Valley Powder Ranch Dip (can be found on the dressing aisle)
1 pint sour cream

Combine sour cream cream cheese. Then add the packet of ranch powder. Stir, chill, enjoy. Great on chips and veggies.

These are all favorites:

Rueben Dip

8 ounces cream cheese, softened
8 ounces sour cream
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 can sauerkraut, drained
3 packs Buddig corned beef, chopped

Mix all together and warm in a crockpot. Serve with crackers, triscuits or rye bread.

Creamy Crab & Artichoke Dip

1 package (8 oz) mock crab, chopped
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 can (13 3/4 oz) artichoke hearts, chopped & drained
3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, blend cream cheese and mayonnaise until smooth. Stir in remaining ingredients and place in a glass baking dish. Bake, uncovered, for 15-18 minutes or until heated through and lightly browned.

Cheese Roll

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese
1 package dry Italian salad dressing mix

Form cheese into log. Roll in dressing. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight. Serve with crackers.

Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip

1 1/2 pounds cooked boneless chicken, chopped in small pieces
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup blue cheese dressing
1 cup red hot sauce
6 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Combine all ingredients except cheddar cheese. Pour into a baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with cheese. When cheese is melted, mix and serve with tortilla chips.

Well, you did ask for something "different" right? ;)

The color of this dip tends to turn people off...really need a label, otherwise it looks like green-gray modeling clay :scared1: . But for oyster lovers, it's mmmmmm... Very good on toasted bagel rounds.

SERVES 4

Ingredients
1 (3 3/4 ounce) can smoked oysters
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch lemon pepper (optional)
1-2 dash hot sauce, to taste
salt or pepper to taste (optional)

Let cream cheese soften to room temperature. Add the oysters (you can either mash them in or coarsely chop then lightly mix them in, depending on the consistency you want), Worcestershire sauce and seasonings. If you want it to be smoother/thinner, sub some of the cream cheese with sour cream or mayo. You can also sprinkle on some chives.

I have a fun bread bowl one!

16 oz sour cream
1 small mayonaisse(real mayo,not miracle whip)
1 lb bacon
3 or 4 tomatoes, depending on size

cook bacon, and crumble
seed tomatoes, and dice
blend sour cream and mayo, fold in bacon and tomatoes
serve in a sourdough bread bowl, don't forget the lettuce for garnish, so you can call it BLT dip!

For something different for a fruit dip -

Caramel Apple Dip

1 block of cream cheese, softened
1 container of dipping caramel (sold in the produce section, next to the apples)
3 Heath bars or chocolate toffee bits, chopped

Spread the cream cheese in a dish. Top w/ caramel dip. Top w/ crushed/chopped Heath bars. Serve w/ slices of Granny Smith apples.

The Knoors vegetable soup packet has a great recipe for spinich dip. It's something like this:

I cup mayo
1 container sour cream
1 envelope Knoors veg soup mix
1 package chopped spinach, thawed and drained
1 can chopped water chestnuts, drained (optional)

Mix together and refrigerate until serving. I always serve it in a hollowed out unsliced loaf of bread.

Chicken cheese spread

8 oz cream cheese softened
1 can Underwood chicken spread
Mix and serve with crackers.

Good for you dip

1 large 12.5 oz. can of turkey or chicken chunks in water
Light ranch dressing to moisten - about 1/2 to 3/4 cup
Drain turkey.
Mix with ranch dressing.
Serve with crackers or sturdy veggies

Caramel Apple dip
1 bag wrapped caramels - unwrapped
tub of cool whip
Melt caramels slowly in microwave.
Fold cool whip into melted caramels
Serve with apple slices that have been dipped in orange juice.
Chill the apple slices in the orange juice and they will stay crisp and not turn brown.

Babs

There is a Rachel Ray one I've made tons of times. It is easy and so good:

1 can chili
1 block cream cheese
10 ounces shredded cheddar (I usually do more)
1 small can diced jalepenos (I've used diced green chilis for a less adventurous crowd.)

I put the chili on to cook and let the cream cheese start melting in while the chili warms. I add the other ingredients. Once it is combined I add:

1 handful fresh cilantro.

Put in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes and voila! Anytime I take it to a party I never have leftovers, and the cilantro adds a fresh taste to it.

I have not tried this yet but is sounds good, I'm making it for Christmas. I think I'll buy gingerbread men cookies (because they will be hard opposed to homemade ones that may be too soft) to serve with it.
Pumpkin Dip
1 3oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 8oz tub thawed frozen whipped topping
1/4 C powdered sugar
1/2 C canned pumpkin
dash of cloves

Beat cream cheese and sugar until well blended. Stir in all remaining ingredients except whipped topping. Fold in whipped topping. Recipe makes about 2 1/2C

This dip I make weekly:
Caramel apple dip
1 8oz pk cream cheese, softened
1/3 C brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2-1 tsp caramel extract

With mixer mix all ingredients together. Serve with sliced apples

Another one I haven't tried but will make for Christmas;
creamy shrimp dip
1 lb cooked small shrimp
1 8oz carton sour cream
4 tsp horseradish or more to taste
1/4 C ketchup
1/4 C mayo
1/2 tsp salt
2 Tbsp fresh dill, snipped plus more for garnish or 2 tsp dried
1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce
1/4 tsp black pepper
3 heads endive

Finely chop shrimp. In medium bowl combine sour cream, horseradish, ketchup, mayo, salt, 2 Tbs fresh dill, hot sauce and pepper. Stir to combine; add shrimp and stir to mix thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate at least 2hrs or up to 1 day. Trim bottoms off endive and remove leaves, cutting end as needed. Remove dip from refrigerator 30min before serving; garnish with dill. Serve with endive or crackers. Makes 3 C

This may be similar to some of the ones posted but it's a quick, simple one (in the TexMex family) and it is a "hit" everytime! I got this from a friend. It's so easy I've never written it down!

spread cream cheese (the soft tub kind is easiest) on the bottom of glass or microwavable pie plate, enough to be about 1/4-1/2" thick

next layer is a can of Hormel turkey chili or vegetarian chili (whichever you prefer)-just place that on top of the cream cheese

Top with a nice layer of cheddar and jack cheese or just cheddar (shredded)

Put some saran wrap on it, when you get to your destination put it in the microwave (remover wrap) for 3 minutes or until cheese is melted nicely

Serve with Scoops or tortilla chips and watch everyone dive into it!

The nice thing is you can make it lowfat by using lowfat cream cheese and lowfat cheese. The turkey chili is lowfat and so is the vegetarian.

Every place I have taken this EVERYONE asks for the recipe!:thumbsup2

We are a dip family! This is a favorite of ours. Plus it warms in a crock pot so it stays yummy however long you need it to.
Hot Bacon and Cheese Dip

8 slices bacon -- diced
8 ounces cream cheese -- cubed
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
6 tablespoons half and half
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon onion salt (or dried minced onion)
dash tabasco sauce
I also like a few dashes of garlic salt

Fry finely diced bacon in skillet until crisp; drain on paper towels and set aside. Place cream cheese, cheddar cheese, half and half, worcestershire sauce, mustard, onion salt and tabasco in the slow cooker. Set on low and allow cheese to melt slowly, stirring occasionally for approximately 1 hour. Taste and adjust seasonings. Just before guests arrive, stir in bacon and serve directly from slow cooker. If mixture becomes to thick, add more half and half to thin.

Sour Cream
Packet of Taco Seasoning
Sharp Cheddar Cheese

Mix them all together and serve with tortilla chips.

I get a lot of compliments on this one:

1 8-oz tub sour cream
1 package of Ranch dressing mix
1 cup shredded cheedar cheese
1/4 cup bacon bits

This is easy to make, and is my favorite dip on ruffled chips:

2 8oz packages of cream cheese
1/2 chopped onion
1 - 1 1/2 large cucumbers (don't peel)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Blend in a blender or mixer just until thick, don't blend too long or it will get runny. It is a really yummy dip.
