Need extra points for a trip - what to do?

I have two questions that I would appreciate anyone's help/opinon on. We are relatively new DVC owners and I'm still not exactly sure of how this works. We have an August Use Year, have 1 point banked from 2011, and will be getting 50 points in 2012.

1. If we borrow points from 2013 (which will be another 50 pts), am I correct that we can travel anytime from Aug. 2012 to July 31, 2013 with 101 points?

2. My parents are thinking of joining us (which we would welcome, seeing as we have two children under the age of 4 and could use extra hands!) and are willing to pay the difference in points so we can get a two bedroom instead of a one bedroom. I thought I read somewhere that you can buy extra points from Disney for one-time use (in other words, you don't need to buy a permenant add-on), but now looking at the website, I can't seem to find anything about that. Is it true? If so, how does it work? Also, I know that DVC members can transfer points to each other - how does that work? I've read through the threads and am still confused.

Thank you!!

Yes you would be able to use the 101 points. You could buy up to 24 points from Disney at $15 a point. They can only be purchased at the 7 month from your trip mark so that is a problem for some people who need to book at the 11 month point. They are for a one time use only and are purchased when you make the reservation.

You can have another member transfer points into your account. You need to make sure they are the same resort and UY you want to use them for. You could get 2011 points and back them if they are within the banking period or you could get 2012 points that would be good during your trip. The rules say that no money can change hands for this transaction but it is known that this does happen as realistically who is just going to give your their points unless maybe family members. You can only transfer points in or out once per year.

Good luck with your trip planning and hope you have a wonderful time.

Renting points from another member is also an option, since many that have available points may not be able to transfer. Renting or transferring from another member is a less costly proposition, in that you can negotiate a lower price than the $15 for the one time purchase.

Just another possibly.....

Since you would probably need a lot more than the one time use points you can buy at the 7 month mark from MS, your options are limited to seeking a transfer of points into your account from another member, booking some of the nights using your own points and renting a reservation for the remaining nights, or booking the nights on cash.

The benefits for accepting a transfer would be that you would now control the points and can use them with your own points--at the 11 month window if they are the same resort and at the 7 month window if they are not.

If you rent a reservation, it would remain in the account of the owner and they would still have control.

Transfering points is your best option. I don't know when your trip is planned for but at the 11 month mark or earlier, I would start searching the rental board here. Find out how many points you need for the 2 br, and search for someone with your resort looking to rent or transfer points. You can keep searching for your home resort transfer points up to the 7 month mark, and then you can transfer anyone's points at that point, and hope your desired reservation is still available.

A transfer is your best option. You basically are paying someone else for their points, and they get deposited into your own account to use. You can only do 1 transfer per use year, so make sure you get enough, and transferred points transactions are final.

If you want to settle this rather quickly you can always contact the Timeshare Store and tell them what you need. They may have owners who are willing to transfer points to you so that you can go ahead and control how and when you make your reservation.

The problem with the rent/trade board is that most members want to rent their points (I do not understand why as I would only want to transfer mine if that situation ever occured. I would not want the responsibility of others renting from me and damaging DVC property). You are also not allowed to post a "request for transfer" thread. Again, I have no idea why, it does not make sense to me, but I am not the power that be that makes these rules.

I ran into the same problem last month and contacted the Timeshare store and had the points tranferred to my account with 24 hours.

Good luck! :wizard:

If it is alright to ask, what rates does the Timeshare Store typically charge for transfers? I am sure it is variable (based on seller and other conditions). But are the prices closer to what you find on the DIS ($9-$12/point) or are they closer to the DVC price of $15/point?

Thanks!

This is very interesting to me. Can I ask how many points you had transferred? I also contacted the Timeshare Store last month requesting a transfer of 75 points into my account to help cover an upcoming trip. When I first inquired about their process they had told me that if they did not have points available to transfer they would contact sellers of contracts to see if any would do a transfer before selling. But when the time came and I needed the transfer, they told me just that they had no points and that none of their sellers (at any of the resorts) would be willing to do a transfer. He said something about people only netting $2/point and it wouldn't be worth it for them. I was very pleased with the Timeshare Store when we purchased resale but was very disappointed how this request was handled. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that they stopped advertising that they have points available for transfer in their emails. I wish my experience was as easy as yours seemed to be.

generally this rule is the reason for rentals rather than transfers as it is often difficult to get someone to want all your points transferred to them.

Wow, lots to think about. We are still deciding when we want to go. I just had a baby and have taken a year and a half off of work (I'm a teacher), so we are not bound by school vacations for once! How hard is it to get a 2 bedroom at the 7 month point? We own at AKV and would prefer to stay there.

Wow, I guess I got really lucky then. I had 40 points transferred. It was more than I actually needed but I took them anyhow. I was surprised at how simple the whole process was. Good to know that it is not automatically like that. All the more reason that we should be able to post a request for a transfer of points and let owners decide if they wish to participate.
