My Father owns a DVC membership at BCV with a use year of April. My Family is considering Adding points to his or outright buying our own. I was hoping some DVC veterans could point out some of the pros and cons of each choice (Not at all concerned with who controls the points).

I Would like to add them or buy at the Boardwalk Villas...can that be added to the Beach club??

It's no problem adding to your dad's contract points from BWV, BCV or wherever. The biggest advantage is that if you are interested in adding a small number of points, this can be done directly thru Disney, and you'll avoid paying losing costs that you'd have to pay privately. The small contracts don't pay to get from resale b/c of this factor, IMO. If you want to add a large # of points, resale may be less expensive in the long run. It may/may not take longer to do an add on thru DVC, and don't forget, the use year MUST be the same (as the one your dad has now) if you add on with Disney (which may add to your wait time to add on points if they don't get points for your use year in for a while). If you go through resale, it can be the same or different use year. Also, years down the road, it may be an issue if you have siblings and the unthinkable happens to your dad.

It would depend on if there are add on points available at this time. Have your Dad call and see if it is possible at this time.

I do not believe you will not be able to buy an add on through DVC to your Dad's contract and put your name on it. I'm pretty sure it has to be the same legal documentation as the first one. You would be best to buy a separate contract which would prevent any legal or ownership issues.

If financing is not an issue, by all means get your own contract. DVC's current add-on pricing is at least $84 per point, and may even be higher now. They also have not exactly been bending over backward to sell points at any resorts other than SSR.

You can get a BWV resale in the low $70s per point. You'll have to pay closing costs of $300-400 for the contract, and will have to negotiate regarding any 2004 dues. But if you look carefully and are patient, you may also be able to find a contract with some 2003 points that are banked.

You'll also be able to insure that the contract is in your name. God forbid something should happen to your father, the last thing you need is for your $15,000+ DVC ownership to get tied-up in his estate because his name is on the contract.

I would recommend buying your own contract... When making reservations, you can always pool your own points in with your father's if you so chose.

Now... Depending on where you wanted to buy and how many points you wanted, it may be to your advantage to go resale vs. Disney... BCV is sold out for the most part through Disney, but you could get on the waitlist, and something may come through...

Hypothetically...I buy 200 points at BWV through resale. I can take these points and somehow pool them with my dad's points at the BCV to make reservations?

I believe you can use points from both contracts to make a reservation. Other DVCers, please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes and no. If you buy them as an add on to your Dad's contract, they could be used together at the 7 month window, 11 months if you bought the same resort. To use them together with separate contracts, you'd need to make separate reservations and link them or transfer points.

Correct...

The only thing I would recommend is that if you will be pooling points often, that you buy at BCV... That way you will be able to take advantage of the same 11 month booking window that your father can, and book BCV at the same time...

But... That being said.. If you were to buy at BWV, and then book BWV at the 11 month window, you'd have two options:
  1. Switch resorts during your stay... IMO, not too big of deal.. Disney makes this process very easy. Plus BCV is just on the opposite side of the lagoon from BWV.
  2. Wait until the 7 month window, and then try and switch one of the reservations over to the other resort... If there was no immediate availability, you could always waitlist.

I totally agree with everyone else. Buy your own contract. You will be able to get the resort you want, at a lower price pre pt and the contract will be in your name. Also then between you and your Dad you will have the 11 month booking advantage at 2 resorts!

Buy your own contract. You won't arouse the little green monster;) among any siblings if you have your own contract, at least not any worse than if you bought a new car.

There is a way you can combine points. You can transfer between contracts, or you can be added as an user to your parents' contract, so that you could use their points when making a ressie. That way you could have one reservation, but you might have 3 nights with points from one contract and 4 nights with points from the other contract. I am not sure I would want to give my adult child access to my points, or vice-versa, but to each his own.:sunny:
