Need dining and hotel at Disneyland help.

We have made many trips to WDW and know most of the ins and outs there, but after a less than fun trip there this year we thought we'd try Disneyland next year. I have found finding info for DL much more difficult than for WDW . Can anyone tell me is the DDP the same there as for WDW or do you tend to eat off site. And which area hotels might anyone recommend or are the Disneyland resorts better for a family of 3, we usually stay and POFQ when in Florida. Any info would be great we are just starting to plan not even sure when next year we'll be going other than in the last half of 2012.

The dining plans aren't similiar. Eating offsite isn't always easy, much cheaper, or better. But it is an alternative.
