I am looking to buy a digital camera. I am not looking for anything fancy and would like to stay in the $100-$150 range (if that is even possible). I would like a zoom feature but don't need much else on it. It would be to take pictures of my daughter in her activities such as dancing, school, and of course, Disney :)

Can anybody give me a place to start? Are there brands that you would recommend for someone with NO camera experience? (i have always used one-time use cameras before). I want it to be simple enough that I can point and shoot...and get a good picture.

Thanks!!!!!!

Well in that price range you wont be able to get a great camera. Dancing usually involves LOW LIGHT conditions and 99% of point and shoot digital cameras do a poor job in low light.

Honestly in that price range I would not get super picky, just browse the ad flyers each week and compare that price befor you pull the trigger.

Here is one that is on sale this week at frys.

Thanks for the link. I should have mentioned that when she dances it is in either a big arena type place or outside so lighting is not an issue. I knowI won't be able to get a really good camera for a cheap price but since it is my first one, I don't want to spend a bunch of $$$.

Does anybody know anything about the Olympus Camedia D540? My sister has an Olypus Camedia c740 she really likes but I can't seem to find that one anywhere. I did find the 540 but didn't know if it was similar or not.

Thanks!

Good or bad is relative. Just be aware that at that price point, shutter lag will be a major problem especially if you want to take perfect (or even remotely perfect) moments in the dance.

Without any intention to put you down, but a starter camera for specific purpose like that runs at least around $300.

I've never had a good experience with Oly (tested a whole bunch of them in the past, never liked any of them, owned one of their highest end -- at the time --, almost slammed it to the floor due to poor AF). Of course, I think my experience is the exception and not the rule (if it is, who buys Oly?)

PS I lied, I had great experience with Olympus Stylus during the 35mm era. The camera was weather proof, that is until the seals dried up and water entered the film compartment during a very light shower.
