We are going to get our dining room painted soon - a dark burgendy color. It also has the chair rail around the bottom, so the bottom half of the room will be white still, along with the trim. Our dining room set is a cherry wood type color. So...now the question is, we need curtains! I hate picking out fabrics. I'm wondering if we should get burgendy, or if that would be too much of the same color, or if we should get it, but with a design in it, or what. Any suggestions, and if anyone has any sites to check out designs that would be great too. Thanks!

What type and color of flooring do you have in this room?

We have light tan neutral carpeting. And the curtain rods and the light hanging above the table are antique bronze. Thanks!

I would get something with a pattern. Burgundy is a tough color to match exactly, so a solid might not be a good idea. You could tie in another color from the kitchen, or even just a color you like. As long as it has a little of the wall color in it you will be fine.

How will you be buying your window treatments? Premade or custom? Custom will give you many more options, but... cha-ching!

We were going to go with a custom drapery for our dining room, but after we were told what the price would be, I settled for the pinch-pleated sheers that were previously on the window.

So, what kind of window do you have? How large is it? What are your typical tastes in window treatments? Do you like heavy draperies or lighter fabrics?

I wanted a droopy swag that came to points with tassels on it with sheers under them and tied back curtains on either side. Very formal and traditional. I had picked a lighter blue/green fabric with creamy tassels and a floral pattern. My window is a bay and my dining room has cherry furniture and a dark blue/green color above the chair rail and wallpaper under it, so our rooms are similar, except yours has warm colors and mine has cold colors.

Why don't you go with something with a white background and some kind of print with burgundy in it??

The style of the curtain will make it look more or less formal, depending on the effect you're trying to achieve. If you get something that hangs to the floor, with sheers between the drapes and tie-backs, that gives you a more formal look. If you get a plain valance, that's a little more casual. It also depends on the size and style of your window.

We have big bay windows in the front of our house in the livingroom and diningroom. I wanted a little bit of a dressy look, without being really heavy formal. I did a scalloped valance with side pieces, because just the plain valance looked too skimpy, due to the size of the windows.

My bedroom is burgundy and I put up gold scarf valances. It looks great. You can accent the room with gold (tablecloth, placemats, etc). Or like the others have said, use a print of some sort that will incorporate the burgundy and the white of your trim. Good luck!

Sounds like what I'm planning on for my living room!! How about some tapestry fabric with burgundy and some gold and other colors in it? You could just do a nice valence type thing or a sway type.

i agree with the gold accents, there are alot of flowery patterns to chose from or even a paisley type would look nice, is the room closed off to the other rooms or is it adjacent with the kitchen like mine is. remember to make sure it doesnt clash with the next room, ours is a fruit motive---mostly reds (kitchen is apple) but the reds are more maroon than red... do you have a door? i have a french door in my dining room and i just have the off white blinds on it, above my door is a transom and it is stained glass, so no curtains there. good luck!
