Need Computer Help

Arggggghhhhhh.....

My computer at home is not working. It turns itself off every few days. Generally, if we unplugged it for a minute or so and plugged it back in we could restart it back up. I think it happened a total of maybe 2-3 times in say six weeks. No one was actually using it at the time. We would just walk by and notice it was off.

Then this past two weeks, every few days it would turn off again. However, now we have to leave it unplugged sometimes overnight before it will restart. Finally yesterday morning it turned off again (it's been about 3-4 days since the last time maybe longer). We've left it off since then and still cannot get it up. We've switched outlets on the battery backup unit, we've unplugged the battery backup and the computer together, etc. and still no luck.

My first thought was a virus but I had just run a virus scan a few days ago and nothing showed up. Besides, it's not starting up and then shutting down. It seems like after it's been on for a long period of time, it shuts down. My DS seems to think it might need a new power cord. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions??? Computers can be such a pain sometimes!

It could be your power supply, the part of the computer where the power cord plugs in. It could be a heat related issue. It could be a number of different things. Power supplies can cost anywhere from $40.00 up to a couple of hundred depending on the wattage and other specs. If you're not comfortable trying that first, you should be able to find someone to diagnose your issue for less than $50.00.

Have you checked the "power saving" settings under "Display Properties". Your PC may be going into hibernation and can wake itself up. Disable all power saving schemes.

If that's not it, I agree that it may be power supply and/or thermal related. Are all of you fans running?
