any ideas or recommendations are appreciated!

I swear, this woman has everything she could need. She is mostly in her house all the time and doesn't go out so restaurant gift cards won't work.

How about a cookie bouquet? If she likes cookies then chances are she will really enjoy one - they are done very nicely and are ...yummy!

How about gift certificates for either chores, a shoping trip, a nice drive somewhere. I have given my Dad certificates for a complete home cooked meal, hedge trimming, lawn mowing, special house cleaning chores ect.

How about a nice holiday flower arrangement or ponsietta plant? Everyone has to eat, so maybe a gift card to the grocery store she goes to? Even some nice soaps/lotions would be nice, or a pair of slippers. It is hard when they are older and have everything! Good luck.

How about a gc to her drug store? With the price of meds that would be a good help.

How about prepaying her utilities for a month or two?

Just last month I went to my uncles 75th b-day party and ONE thing got a big reaction, out of about 25 gifts....the gift certificate to Applebee's (he lives near one - could be any convenient restautant.) He said, loudly, "now, THIS I can use!!" Ofcourse, those of us who had gotten something else felt ...well, you know....but it makes sense...who likes to cook every single night?! And, as he said, "they do nice take-out."
Good-luck!!

Nicely scented (and not-too-greasy) body lotions and hand creams are always appreciated. A senior's skin has a tendency to be dry, especially in the winter. We always make sure that my MIL, who is turning 81 on Friday, has a nice supply of Bath & Body Works products to choose from.

I use to get my grandma all occasion cards stationary and a few books of stamps That way she could send out her cards and notes all year long

I did the stamps, envelopes, paper/stationary, canned goods of their favorite items - great granny loved the canned pink salmon but thought it was too expensive to buy - paper products (toilet, tissue, paper towels, napkins) - not real 'gifty' but always needed.

I also baked breads - date nut, banana nut, cranberry etc - used my little loaf pans - wrapped them so they could be frozen

One aunt was always knitting so would get her skins of yarn

hope this helps

If she's on a fixed income then a gift card to her local grocery store is a good idea.

The all occasion cards & stamps is also nice.

Does she live in a cooler climate? What about those fuzzy socks that you see everywhere now (JCPenney, Sears, etc.)

The plus in air freshener from Bath & Body or Yankee Candle is also nice.

Someone mentioned the pink salmon being "too expensive" for her gramma, so how about some of the things she thinks are luxuries & won't buy for herself.

We buy the grandmas a wreath or fresh basalm centerpiece each year. They seem to enjoy them. It's kind of like sending my MIL flowers for Mothers Day, at this point, I think it's just kind of expected. (One year I bought MIL a gift and she was at work telling all the ladies she was waiting on the flowers we send every year. OOPS!!)

My MIL gives gifts to a lot of people and also likes to do stamps or lottery tickets (not for everyone but some people like). Another thing that might go along with the stamps is a greeting card organizer. There is one on Amazon.com that has room for addresses and comes with note cards as well.

Does it get cold where you are? Now that winter is almost here, I've been thinking a nice new throw or electric blanket would be nice!

What we did for my mother's 80th and 90th Birthday Partys was provide memories. People brought old newspaper clippings that involved her, or photos, or other memorabilia. We also had a lot of people get up and tell stories about her.

Actually my sister and I hosted the 90th party in a hotel for 130 guests. Mom was the only one who knew everyone. There were relatives, neighbors, friends, former co-workers, etc.

This is along the same lines, but would probably have to be done next year or for an upcoming birthday as it takes some time to put together............

For my grandmother's 80th I mailed a letter, along with stationary & a self addressed envelope addressed to me, to all my grandmother's siblings, children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, etc. I asked them to write a letter about my gramma with memories & what you loved most about her. She cherished that book.

She passed away this past March & we found that book in her night stand drawer. It now sits in my family room for all to read. It was cherished by her & will be cherished for generations to come as they can all "get to know" my gramma as we knew her.

Some things my grandmother used to appreciate...

aspirin
vitamins
stamps
slipper socks with treads on the bottom
coffee
burger king gift certificates

My stepfather is 83 and lives alone, about 1/2 hour away from us. For the past 2 Christmas's I have given him "Dinner of the Month Club". I make up a menu for a dinner for each month. I try to include things that he is unlikely to make for himself (ie: Lasagna) or things I know he especially likes. I do most of the prep and cooking at home and finish things up/reheat items as needed. My family then eats the dinner with him at his home. He loves this gift because it guarantees that he will have a nice meal (and I make enough for him to have another meal of left overs) and he gets to have company. Having someone else to eat with is probably what he likes the most.

Here are a few ideas:

1) Take some photos of friends & family (old ones she had stored in old albums/etc) and make her a scrapbook of memories.

2) Land's End has several good things: personalized totes, cashmere gloves & scarves, & hats. These would all be great for an older person!

3) Hankies..embroidered with her initials.

4) A gift I gave my 70 YO grandmother a few years ago...I gave her a pretty journal, and I asked her to wrote down her random thoughts, dreams, or anything she wished to write. I hope she has been doing it because I would love to have it to read & cherish one day!
