My vacuum is going kaput. I need to get a new one but my budget is small, I only have about 100-150 to spend. I don't really have a lot of carpet areas and it's not real thick or plush. Tell me what kind of vacuum you have.

I only have 1 8x10 carpet. Everything else is hardwood.

We use an upright hoover. It was about $200 at Costco maybe 3-4 years ago.

Due to allergies we've stripped wall to wall out of each home, so our vacuums have lasted for a long time.

I've got a Dyson Animal and a Shark Navigator Lift Away. I love the Shark. I love it more than the Dyson. I got it from Kohl's with the 30% off and I know it was under $150.

We had a Bissel upright that we bought at a garage sale for $10 maybe 5 years ago. It finally self-destructed just this week. We have mostly laminate and tiles floors, but we used it several times a day for area carpets in our high-traffic rooms of the house. Prior to that we had a Kenmore upright that also lasted for about 5 years (paid about $150 for it new at Sears, but that was over 10 years ago and we had wall-to-wall carpet in nearly every room).

That said, I'm hoping to find another upright either on Craigslist or yard sale, since I just can't justify spending upwards of $100.

I have a Dirt Devil that was on sale at Target - I paid less than $50 for it (and I think closer to $30) and I love it - it works far better than the Dyson I had (and threw away) and is easier to use than the Meile (which I love, but is a $400 vaccuum).

This one: http://www.target.com/p/dirt-devil-...-12649682#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=dirt+devil. If you don't need it right now, wait for a sale. I know I saw it for $30 at Christmastime.

I have a Bissell bagless. Have had it for almost 2 years and it still works great. We have cats, dog, teens and preschooler in the house plus all the friends...I have a rug in living room over hardwood floor, carpet on stairs and hallways. The only draw back I find is the cord length, I would much prefer 2 more feet, but that is due to the odd location of plugs in my home.

I didn't start out with a plan to own multiple items from the same company, but I also have the Bissell steamer sweeper and a Bissell stick vacuum (that is for the car mostly.)

we bought the basic Shark upright for maybe $75 at BJs that was supposed to be good on pet hair. It's small and looks cheap but it works great on carpet and hardwood. I like that it's bagless

http://m.target.com/p/bissell-cleanview-helix-bagless-upright-vacuum-cleaner-82h1/-/A-10525623 I am so happy I found this vacuum still in stock at Target (online) - it is discontinued. I have had this vac for over 7 yrs and it is great. All filters are washable, which means you don't have to keep spending $ on it every month or two. It has a HEPA filter, which I thought wasn't working because I had used the vacuum almost daily for years and it was barely gray with dust. Then we moved and the first time I vacuumed the "clean" carpet it turned black! I did purchase a washable HEPA filter for about $10 on Amazon. This vacuum does not lose suction or get clogged. If suction seems weak you just have to wash the filters and it will have perfect suction again. It is only $80 at Target. The only reason I'm buying a new one is I don't want the hassle of changing the belt, which is the problem it got a few days ago. That probably seems unfrugal but my cost per use is probably one cent and I would be very sad if I couldn't find this model again down the road.

I like wet dry vacuums such as shop vac- they are cheap don't lose suction and can take anything from per hair to glass. I prefer to use filter bags for easy cleanup - you can get them with good accessories too.

I don't have a lot of carpet, but my cheap Eureka vac works fine. Definitely under $50. Save the rest you have budgeted for something else.

I have that same Shark from Kohls. Love it!! Does a great job of picking up dog hair.

Another vote for Shark. Forget the model but we got it at Target and it does a great job. Better than the Oreck it replaced.
