My daughter is turning 9 and we are thinking about her birthday party. Last year's was almost exclusively girls and we had it at a children's museum. This year will be another girl party.

She said something about wanting to do it at a salon where they would do hair/make up/nails but I think she might be too old for that already. They tend to do that for young girls here.

I suggest perhaps a party at a "painting plates" pottery place. Perhaps to follow it up she would have few of the girls back to the house to sleep over.

Does anyone have any novel ideas for a girls party?

At about that age, we did a girlie girl party for my daughter. We made hair ribbons, and I did hair wraps for the girls. They had a dance contest, stuff like that. I think we did some sort of picture frame craft too.

The hair ribbons and wraps were easier than you'd think. Klutz makes step by step books for both of them, and Michaels or Franks sells the supplies. Good luck!

Do you have a Build a Bear or similar store near you? They have really fun parties. All the girls can go and build their own bear or other animal.

I agree, make-up stuff is to old for 9yo's. I wouldn't want my dd attending a party like that until she was at least 13.

Also, look at your YMCA. They do lots of neat parties, swimming, soccer, dance, etc. You don't have to be a member to book one (it just cost's a bit more.)

Or, how about a bowling party?

How about a luau party? That would be a lot of fun and there are so many ideas out there.

Good luck!:sunny:

How about a baking/tea party. You can have the girls make all kinds of special treats from cookies, muffins, to mini sandwiches...and they can sit down to tea while you bring out the birthday cake.

Actually, I think the OP said the salon does younger girls, and that she thought her DD was too old. I would disagree and say that my 9 yo and her friends would love to go have their nails done. I would not do make up bc some parents do object to that (me included).

As for Build a Bear, you have to have a pretty good budget for that. It's pricey!

My DD will be 10 in June and we're going to see the new Harry Potter movie, then coming back here for cake.

Beth,
We had a "Glamour Girls Makeover" party for my DD. There is a woman in NJ (a licensed cosmetologist) and her assistant who come to your house and do nails and hair for each girl. My DD was concerned that it would be 'babyish' but the woman brings lots of clips and beads and does some really funky 'Hillary Duff' and 'Miranda'-type hairdos. She does really creative stuff with nails and some very light makeup. The girls LOVED their makeovers! (I guess they watch too much of that on HGTV!) She also brings a great CD of dance music for that pre-teen age. Finally, she brings a goody bag of a brush, small lipstick, barrettes and clips, a mirror and some candy for each girl.
After the makeovers, when we could get the girls to stop squealing over each other, we took Polaroids. We had each girl decorate a picture frame (bought lots of craft stuff - feathers, beads, sequins, etc.) and they had those as party favors. A pizza, some dance contests, a few party games (Twister Moves was a big hit),and ice cream cake and they had a great time.
If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you the info to contact the woman who does these parties.

I posted under another thread about what we did for a birthday party one time.

We broke into 3 teams of 3 kids and each team got $20 to spend.

We went to the mall, and had a list of inexpensive things to buy like socks, earings, gum, a pen, nailpolish etc.

Whichever team got the most things on the list won and all items were donated to the birthday girl.

Then we had cake and ice cream in the food court.

It was actually really inexpensive, it was fun and easy to do.
