Need beach info Appalachiola area

We would like to stop at a nice beach area on the way back home to lesson the withdrawl symptons. I am looking at the Applachiola/ St. George island area. If anybody is familiar with this area I would appreciate any recommendations on a place to stay and places to eat.

We have stayed at the cape san blas area about 30 miles west of Apalachicola for the last 20 years. The beach is wonderful and very relaxing and isolated. Century 21 has a web site that lists there homes - I think it is capsesanblasvacations.com.

My parents own a home on Cape San Blas, and it is really a beautiful area. If you stay in that area, be sure to go to St. Joseph's State Park (at the very tip of the cape) --- it's rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the US. It's georgeous, and not crowded.

St George island park is WONDERFUL, the beach is beautiful. When I lived in Tallahassee we would drive the extra miles to visit this beach.

Thanks everyone. I made a reservation at Pt. St. Joe close to the state park. It's hard to find something that rents for less than a week at this time of year. Does anyone have any suggestions for supper or breakfast?

It's great to hear someone talking about my neck of the woods. I basically grew up in Panacea (or Alligator Point). I'm not sure if it's too far for you, but for good food, Julia Mae's in Carrabelle is as good as it gets. Farther east on Hwy 98 is Angelo's past St Teresa. Both are family favorites that we have eaten at for the past 30 years. Enjoy Port St Joe, and next time, check out Alligator Point - similar to St George, but less commercial (yes, I know that sounds impossible, but it's true).
It's great to spend a few days there after a week at WDW to unwind.

My GM lives on Mexico Beach which is not faraway and whenever we go we drive to Apalachicola to eat at Boss's an oyster bar right on the water at 125 Water Street. If you like oyster's it is a great place. They fix them every way in the world and have really good onion rings. They also have an outdoor patio on the water to eat on if it isn't to hot. Also to get there be sure to drive the back road that goes from St. Joe to Apalachicola by Indian Pass Beach (my favorite spot) you have to turn off the main road but you can park at the end of the dead end (Indian Pass is sort of a small pensuila) and walk down a very pretty beach. I can also second the rec for Julie Mae's which is an extra drive but they have a great fired seafood platter and serve wonderful homemade pies. In Mexico Beach is a small beach bar/resturant Tucan's which is also good and also has a beach patio. You will love the area, by the way are you staying at St. Joe beach or in Port St. Joe because it dosen't actually have a beach and isn't that attractive, but it is only a short drive away form the state park. Also if you are interested in staying on the beach a little further down there are two nice hotels at Mexico Beach the El Govoner and The Driftwood Inn. I have never stayed at either but both look nicer than your average hotel in this area. You will find a lot of very old 50's style one story motor court type hotels along this highway as you have already mentioned most vacationers in this area rent houses for a week or more so there isn't as much demand for hotel rooms. Anyway I think you will love this area and I hope that you have fun!

We also love Indian pass - ever stayed at the Turtle Beach Inn? It's a great bed and breakfast on a perfect stretch of beach.

I grew up spending summers at Cape San Blas , pretty beach and really no commercialism at all. Not many places to eat except for driving a little ways. I would not stay in Port St Joe, it is not attractive and used to have the smelly paper mill there(does it still??) . Anyway, St George Island is another favorite. Hope you can find something to rent on the beach of either place. They are both rather secluded places.

I guess we are actually staying at Cape San Blas. I got a small cabin at The Old Saltworks cabins. It is on the bay but you cross the street to the beach. It's before you get to the St. Park. We are pretty excited about checking out this area and probably will plan a longer stay in Oct. Thanks for all the info everybody.

By the way, I don't know why I put this under the transportation board. I don't think I meant to but I have gotten some good responses.

It was actually a moderator I was questioning. I found this on the resort board and it had been moved to transportation! I was questioning why they moved it here, I think most people answered that saw the link on the resort board!
Another great place with more to do is the Destin area-more resort atmosphere. Also Panama City, but it gets lots of tourists. Cape San Blas is pure beach, nothing else there-great way to relax! We used to camp there as a child as there were no motels or houses. Now there are rentals.

Oh, so that's what happened.

We do usually go to the beach in Seagrove so this will fun to see a different area.

I do now have a transportation question. Mapquest recommends cutting down on 319 before Tallahassee. Is this the best way or would there be a better way staying on the Interstate a little longer.
