So, what ideas do you all have?

This is for a neice & her DH...they had a large wedding 4 years ago & have been living in the first floor of a multifamily (his family owned it) home.

Now they just bought their own first house.

Ideas for a house warming gift???

When in doubt, I go with a "Home Sweet Home" Yankee cande. :)

What about yard or gardening tools? Lots are on sale for great deals now - have they needed them before, and will they need them now?

Maybe a gift card to Lowes or Home Depot? You can always use stuff from there.

How about a tree or bush or gift certificate to a nursery. Or if they have a fireplace, equipment for that. Or a tool box or fire extinquisher.

I forget exactly what they're called, but Bed, Bath & Beyond sells really neat stone coasters.

The stone they're made of absorbs condensation from glasses.

They come in a variety of designs; some are very cute and whimsical.

I got FOUR of these - the LARGE jars - when I moved into my house.

I would go with a gift card to Pier 1...so she can start decorating her house.

Or a Home Depot / Lowe's gift card...if this is the first time they are 'responsible' for outdoor work, they might not have the necessary tools.

I do Wallflower plugins from Bath and Body works, candles, and handsoaps from Bath and Body. I usually wrap them in a $1 trashcan from Dollar Tree. I figure everyone needs some good smelling stuff in a new house (esp rental) and people often can't find their handsoap for bathrooms and kitchens.

Practical, in my mind, anyways. Plus cheap =) LOL

I had gotten my cousin and her family a toaster oven, and they enjoy that. It can toast, defrost, cook, and such.

I like the idea of gardening tools or a tree...they never needed that before.

Any more ideas??

If they've always lived in multi-family - do they have grill stuff for doing a bbq? I know in Texas laws prevent you from bbqing if you have multiple families on the property... That is something they'll likely use for a long time and the little Weber grill is great and very reasonable. And again, it should be on sale this time of year...

How about a small kitchen appliance people don't usually buy for themselves? I got my friend a smoothie maker and a few mixes. Fun and functional.

I'm also a big fan of (receiving) gift certificates. Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, or even a place like Target are all great places to shop for stuff for a new home.

Gift card to a Home Depot/Lowes or Walmart/Target
You always need things for the home.

In addition to any of the above suggestions,

I always add the "Its a Wonderful Life" gift... a loaf of bread, so this house may never know hunger, a box of Kosher Salt, - that life may always have flavor, and Wine - that joy and prosperity may reign forever.

(the Kosher salt because more and more recipes are calling for it, its a bigger more flavorful salt imo, and not all have had this)

We've been remodeling our new house for the last 6 months - and those Home Depot Cards have been GREAT!

But, something a little more personal may be a Christmas ornament reflecting the first Christmas in their new home.

I found a great Mickey/Minnie that said "Our New Home" that I just had to buy for myself last year - we moved in on 12/26...

When we bought this house our realtor gave us a gift certificate to Home Depot and we thought it was the BEST thing! She said she usually gave people gift certificates for dinner, but since we had a little one she thought the Home Depot gc was better - she was right! Funny thing is that she was at Home Depot when I was in there cashing it in! :) (I bought some lawn furniture and yard tools)
