need advise from Boston diser's

You should be able to find a hotel room in the Boston area at an affordable rate look for hotels in the medical center areas they tend to cater to patients and families. Also look at hotels on the MBTA line I'd stick with the major lines red think Quincy, Green look to lechmere Somerville area, orange line Boston medical, or charlestown. To be honest you should be able to find something in the city under $150, I usually stay at a Marriott whenever fiance decides to paint something or some kind of rehab work and I never pay more then $150. I'd check priceline but also go directly to hotel website and also call hotels directly and ask for a manager ask them if they can do better then the web rate you'd be surprised.

That Residence Inn in Woburn is a good suggestion - really convenient to commuter rail as stated above. Another good choice is the Hampton Inn in Cambridge; walking distance to Lechmere T station, Museum of Science, and Cambridgeside Galleria. And as far as I know, free secure parking.

I also recommend the Residence in Woburn. I worked in the office building next to it and my company always used it when flying in out of town workers. The commuter rail is a 5 min walk and there is a Starbucks and Target 5 mins away plus the Residence has a free "taxi bus" that will take you to local spots (restaurants, the mall, commuter rail if you don't want to walk). I live on the North Shore not far from Salem, actually lived in Salem for years and would certainly recommend it for a day trip. It's a nice city and fun to walk around and see all the sights. There is a lot to see and do. I also agree that the Freedom Trail, Quincy Hall/Fanueil Hall, The North End to eat, Newbury Street to shop, the Aquarium, Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts are all fun also.

I can't help much with hotels. Brookline is nice if they have your price range. There is a Hyatt Place in Medford which may be cheaper though you would have to take the bus to the subway (Wellington or Sullivan on the orange line) though they might have a hotel shuttle. I had a friend stay at
the Best Western Terrace in in Brighton (Boston neighborhood) which was right across the street from the green line but not in the heart of the touristy area so usually cheaper.

For historical attractions I would look at USS Constitution & Museum, Old South Meeting House, Old State House, Prudential Skywalk, Freedom trail guided tour, Paul Revere house etc. There is a new liberty tour in either Lexington http://www.libertyride.us/libertyride.html that I've heard good things about but never done yet.

I was going to suggest the Quincy Marriott as well.

I'd stay away from places on the commuter rails and try to stick with the regular T lines. It'll be much more convenient. I just did a quick search on Hotwire for the last weekend in September (5 days ish), and it looks like there are some 3+ star hotels in Brookline, Newton, Harvard area and even one in the Back Bay/Copley for between 100 and 125/night. Any of those areas are going to be fairly close to public transportation. If you could get the Back Bay/Copley one for $100 per night, I'd do that in a heartbeat. That's right in the middle of the city.

September is a great time of year up here! Enjoy your trip!

Don't wait until the last minute to rent a car, weekends in eary fall are prime rental for this area. We once had an emergency Columbus Day weekend and Hertz in MA was completely sold out.

I would like to plan a late September trip to Boston ( 5 days) and up the coast a bit to see see the Fall leaves. Southwest had bargain airfare to Boston for 69.00 each way to BOS and I had vouchers soon to expire.
Thinking of staying in Boston area and using the mass transit for attractions. Hotels seem priced very high. Any one know of a decent area or hotel that would be close to a transit station and not overly priced. I really want to stay below 125.00 a night.
What are the not to miss things in Boston. I really enjoy history and have never been to this part of the country before.
Hoping Alamo will continue their 20.00 weekend special into the fall so we can get a car Sat-Sun -Mon and drive into New England. Any ideas of towns not to miss.
Thanks
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have had some time to research but now have more questions of course.
Based on Better Bidding I can get the Sheraton Boston Hotel (Back Bay area, attached to the Prudentail Center) for 100.00 a night on hotwire. That seems a very good deal. If I am reading this correctly, it's a short walk to a metro station on the green line.
Will this area be convientient for the freedom trail and museums.
Also question on the Metro Link week pass for 15.00. It seems a good deal. Would appreciate any imput on that. Thinking of doing 3 days here and renting a car for Sat-Mon for drives to the more remote areas and a more remote country hotel. How bad will traffic be driving from the north to Logan around 6pm on a Monday?
Thanks

The Sheraton is a nice hotel in Back Bay, I believe it just had a big multi-million dollar renovation. My Dad and I actually cut through there the other day on our way to Fenway Park!

It is located very close to the Green Line and a short walk away from Back Bay station on the Orange Line so you will be able to take the subway pretty easily to the Freedom Trail/historic sites part of town. It is also attached to the Hynes Convention Center and the Prudential Mall which is also connected to the Copley mall which basically means you have lots of places to eat without ever having to go outside. LOL Plus the Prudential has a nice attraction in the building itself, the Skywalk Observatory. The Duck Boats also depart from the Prudential and they are lots of fun.

I would say if you can get the Sheraton for $100, I would do it. That is a great price for a hotel in that area.

The Back Bay Sheraton is a great location! And for $100/night, that's a great deal. As PP said, close to T station and lots within walking distance. Close to Boyloston Street, Newbury St (great shops). If the weather is nice and you don't mind walking, you can walk to the Boston Gardens and Common. Have fun!! :)
As far as traffic, I live on the south shore so can't really help with that, sorry!
and $15 for a T pass for the week is a good deal. It's $2 one way, so $4 round trip. so if you use it 4 times it was a good deal. :)

You might want to consider leaving Boston on Saturday and booking a hotel in northern NH for Saturday and Sunday nights. If you want a hotel in northern NH, you need to think about booking it now. Late September is foliage season here in the White Mountains depsite what PP's have said. It might not be peak foliage but it is still colorful usually. In fact some years the Columbus Day tourists get nothing but bare trees since all the leaves have dropped by then. I've lived in northern NH for years and am in the Whites, not in the Great North Woods.

Also, the T station and tracks for Lechmere are under renovation. According to the signs, the renovation will last until December. We were there this weekend and it means that they are doing a free shuttle from the Lechmere station to North Station. The problem is that when there is traffic, it can take quite a while.

Back Bay Sheraton is very nice!!!! $100.00 is a great price. If you are doing the Duck tour make sure you make advance reservations.....
