Need advice

I have a reservation for 4 nights at VWL in July, just after the 4th. Because of a recent job loss, there is a good possibility that we won't be using the reservation. Since my use year is August, I won't be able to bank the points or use them before the end of July.

Is it better to post the reservation on the rent/trade section to see if someone can use it? The other option is that I would need to cancel my reservation in order to have David's rent out the points. Seems crazy when the reservation is already set, but that's how they roll.

Any advice? Please don't tell me to take the vacation unless you're willing to pick up the tab for my airfare and park tickets.

I have never done any of these options--but you could consider putting the whole reservation on ebay. Otherwise, figure out which way you could get the most $ for the points.

One other point... you could do a no-parks trip. Then it's just a matter of the airfare.

I would put the reservation on the rent/trade boards listed as ###points at $$ per point. Then state preference will be given to people who want the current reservation, second to people interested in all ### points.

I'd also hurry too. You still have 4 full months to rent them.

If they are current UY points, you can cancel the reservation and bank them right? Or even consider transferring them.

The banking deadline for August UY is March 31. So, if they are all August 2013 points, you could cancel the reservation, and you have until the end of this month to bank them. If there are any banked 2012 points or borrowed 2014 points, those would have to somehow be used before July 31, 2014.

You could post the points for rental here without mentioning the reservation and post the reservation on craigslist, ebay, redweek, Timeshare Users Group and the like as well as offer it to friends.

If the points cannot be banked, then, perhaps, you can post your available week on Facebook and offer it to friends.

We had points expiring in a little over a months time. My husband asked around at work if anyone would be interested in them and someone took him up on the offer right away.

We are going next month and in Sept., but I'm always thinking about going~ especially if the price is right. Message me with the dates , asking price, etc. and maybe I can get a friend or two to go since I'm sure spouse won't take more time off from work!
Sorry to hear about the job loss. It is a most stressful and uncertain time in one's life. I do feel your pain. My husband lost his just over 5 years ago; a week before a WDW trip; he said not to cancel it since it was all paid for, including air, and we didn't. He found an 'almost' comparable job close to home within 5 weeks and with his severance package and sign on bonus, we actually made out very well that year! The extra income offset much of our daughters - then in the planning stages- wedding! He is still with the new company- less stress and same income. We got very, very lucky. I will say prayer things turn out as well for you.

I had offered the reservation to many friends and family over the part month but didn't have any takers. I wasn't even looking for money because I like to see people enjoy Disney. It was almost like when I had Knicks tickets and couldn't give them away either. Maybe people would place more value on something if you charge them?

I thought that I had used banked points that were expiring at the end of July which is why I was exploring options. Maybe I should have called member services first. They were very helpful so kudos to them.

Good luck with everything! I've gotten laid off twice now before planned trips. It's kind of the nature of my work, so I really shouldn't be surprised. Hope you find a better one!
