Need advice....un-happy family members

The wedding isn't just for the Bride & Groom. It is also for family and friends to witness. A wedding that involved everybody making a trip would seem to big an imposition if i was the one getting married. If i was the guest i would feel guilty at not going because of cost and irritated if they could have had a local wedding but didn't. A big welcome home party WITH wedding cake would appease me though.

Its nice to see someone who thinks the way I do. I think too much emphasis is put on things like the right dress, the right color, the right flowers and the like. Its supposed to be about committing to the person in your life, not about the party.

I agree about the imposition. I felt horribly guilty for asking my family to go down to the states for my wedding. The problem is that everyone had to travel because I live in Canada and he lives in the US.

Its just worked out that we simply can't afford things the way we want them so we are going to elope and then just have a small reception in each location for the family. Just food, no music and the like.

I think alot of people understand how you feel, having a destination wedding is difficult on anyone. But like everyone has said, this is YOUR day. They should be happy to be invited, in my opinion. It's not like you all are running off to Vegas and only giving 24 hour notice (not that there is anything wrong with this, trust me this has crossed my mind a few times). We only expect about 8 members of our family to be making it to our wedding, and we love the fact that we'll be able to spend alot of one on one time with those who made the effort to make it there. You can't please everyone, and once everything is over and done everything will settle and they'll be happy to see that you have found someone that makes you happy!
