No flames plz..

Some friends of ours have separated. They had 1 dog and 3 cats. He didnt take any of the animals. She cant afford the upkeep/dr bills. She told me I could have one. Normally I wouldnt have taken this type of cat because I like pretty, long hair, fluffy cats but I felt bad for them.

6 weeks later the cat is doing fine, we are doing fine but I am just not in love with this cat like I have been with others and our dogs. She just exists. She is 2.5 yrs old.

She has told me that if I want to get rid of the kitty then she would take her back but that was weeks ago and I really hate to do that. I am not sure how that would affect our friendship or if she even meant it. You know how sometimes people just say things. I kinda get the feeling she is relieved that we have taken the cat.

Fast forward to today. We are at petsmart and there is a gorgeous long hair tortiseshell female that I want. Now I feel terrible because I feel like I am stuck with this cat (which will probably live to be 20yo :rotfl: ). but I am mad at myself for feeling this way.

Having another cat is not the answer. DH will allow only one cat and with our two dogs and 1 cat, I feel our fur family is complete.

Any advice?

Give the cat back. The cat needs a loving home and it sounds like you're only going to love a "fluffy" cat and that's not fair to the cat that's lost her home. I imagine that your friend would be more relieved to know the cat was loved rather than just tolerated.

ETA.. My post sounded a little more harsh than I meant it to. I think that you were kind to take in the cat but it's just not working out for both of you. The cat is also just tolerating you so it works both ways. Again, I urge you to give her back and not worry too much about it.

I don't really have any advice and am sorry that you're going through this.

But I may have a little insight on why the cat is just "existing". Since she was used to having other cats around she probably misses them. A fw months after we got our 1st cat, some friends of ours came to visit and adopted a cat while they were here. About a week later they left to go back home. Well, my cat started meowing and looking for the other cat and then just became depressed and lethargic. So we went and got another cat and that perked her right up and she was back to her old self.
Since you're not looking to get a second cat, I won't suggest that to you. But you
may want to talk to your friend and explain the issues with the cat. Your friend actually broke up their "pride" by letting you take one of them. Her other cats may be having issues with their missing their sister. I know that none of our cats could survive without each other now.

Hugs to you.
