Ok, so I'm new to this.............

I need to send a note to both the teacher & office informing them of DD's absence. Yes, she will be missing 5 days for our vacation.

This isn't meant for a debate, just need help on what to put in the note.

I don't want to give too much info, but not too little either.

Anyone have an example note they used???

DD is in Kindergarten.

TIA!

At that age, I would send in a note a week or so ahead of time saying: "Dear Teacher, DD will be out of school beginning date to end date due to a family vacation. If possible, please let me know if there is any work that she will miss that you would like her to complete while we are away. Sincerely, Mom".

Then, I'd send a note her last day before the vacation, reminding the teacher/admin. that DD will be out for the following week.

When DS missed a week of school in Kindergarten for a family vacation, I gave him a disposable camera and let him take pictures during the trip. We had the film developed and made a little scrapbook of his trip, which he turned in to his teacher at school. We also took books and read for 10-15 minutes each day. (I think the teacher had given DS a few worksheets, but nothing strenuous.)

Enjoy your trip!

I am a first grade teacher and parents just usually send me a quick note of when, the dates, their child will be gone! No big deal! Have fun and enjoy your time with your family!!

We just wrote (for the girls... 1st and 4th) the dates, and that we would assure that the kids made up all homework.... and however the teacher felt was the best. Most teachers ask us where we are going... we tell them,, they tell us "More families should spend time together..." DD6 already has her 'assignment' for our trip... she has to send a postcard to the classroom....(he does this for everyone who goes on vacation,,,then the class will discuss ) and she will keep a simple journal w/a few pics to share. Some teachers even have kids do this if they are taking a 'day trip'... every family 'event' is important to that child.... We took the kids out early one year for 1/2 day to go Moral hunting. (not something we did before or after...but Father inlaw was diagnosed as terminal and this was something he enjoyed w/the kids. DDs were able to share w/the class what a Moral was... etc..what you look for when hunting them...JUST NOT where we hunt them. ;)

Thanks everyone!

I'll keep it short and simple and hope they are OK with it. :)

My son's school requires that a family trip be educational in order for it to be an excused absence. I found this letter template online last year and used it. If you want short and sweet, this isn't it. But it does do the job.

DATE:
TO: [school official]
FROM:
RE: [students name and vacation dates]
Please be advised that [student] will be out of school during the week of [date]. We ask that his absences be excused.
The reason for [student]'s absence is that our family will be out of the state during this week. While we are gone, we will be visiting Walt Disney World. We believe that [student] will be learning many things during this trip and that his education will continue in his absence from school.
Some things [student] will learn about:
* Different cultures of the world, including architecture, language, diet, and dress, by visiting the different countries in the Epcot World Showcase (Japan, China, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Canada, France, etc.) [student] will have the chance to explore the exhibits for each country and speak with natives from each country who work as cast members.
* American history by viewing the Hall of Presidents presentation in the Magic Kingdom and the American Adventure show in Epcot.
* Nature and conservation at Animal Kingdom.
* Science by exploring the Mission:Space ride in Epcot where he will have a chance to see and feel what it would be like to travel by rocket to Mars and by experiencing the Universe of Energy exhibit which teaches about fossil fuels, energy, and conservation.
* Economics by managing his own spending money and making budget decisions on how to spend his money.
[student] will also be learning about map reading by navigating in and to the different theme parks, as well as the resorts and water parks via the Disney bus system, sociological aspects of crowds including patterns and behavior, physics of the different rides, breakthroughs in technology at the Innoventions computer lab in Epcot, art and animation and the history of film, and mathematics.
We believe this will be a wonderful and educational experience for [student] and hope you agree not to charge him with unexcused absences as a result. If it is possible for [student] to take any assignments with him to be turned in when we return or to turn in before we leave any work that will be due while he is gone, please let us know as soon as possible.
Thank you for your attention to this. If you have any questions or need any further information, please feel free to contact me.

I would just say my child will be absent and give the days. I wouldn't say vacation. I would just say we need to attend to family business if they want a reason.

And do remember, you are not "asking" for their permission, you are "telling" them your child/children will be gone to where ever it is you choose to tell them you are going to.

Well, I know my DD will tell them she is going to Disney so here's my note:

Mrs. xxxxxxx,

DD will not be in school 9/22 through 9/26. If possible, please let me know if there is any work that she will miss that you would like her to complete while we are away.

Thank you,

XXXXXXXX

If she asks me where, I will tell her Disney b/c I know my DD will be talking about it............

Thanks everyone!

Hi! 1st grade teacher here:teacher:

Just make it a 2 sentence note stating: DD's name & the dates she'll be out.

It's no big deal. Have a great vacation!

The times that we have done this I've spoken with the teacher first to let her know that my child will be out. I then send a note stating that my child will be out from Date to Date, that I'd like to get their assignments prior to Date and have their absences excused. No details are needed. All school districts are different but unless they ask for more detail I'm not going to volunteer it.
