Looking at buying a camcorder. Would like to get a high optical zoom and a digital DVD model. Does anyone have one they would like to brag on? Or any models to stay away from? I have looked up consumer reports, but would like to hear your opinions. Thanks.

I have the panasonic palmocorder. It has a great zoom, takes great pics in low light and also takes still digital pics. I have had it almost 2 years I think and I am very happy with it. It was under 500.

I have the Sony Handycam 203, it is the one without the stereo surround sound. We bought it last year, it is our 3rd Handycam in 17 years and we love it, small, lightweight and the "easy" button sold me.

From what I've read, mini-DV is still a better way to go than DVD, in terms of both recording and long-term storage of the source video.

I highly recommend Sony Handycams, regardless of which medium you decide on. I have the HC32, and had a great time pulling together a 4 DVD set for my family based on our trip in January.
