Ok so next year i'm going to be a freshmen :scared1: and this week is high school registering week... So I want to take french and culinary class... but my mom has other plans for me that are driving me crazy she wants me to take band and I absolutely HATE BAND she says that i'll magically love it in High School and i seriously doubt any of that true. She wont listen to me when I say I HATE BAND and I want to quit. One reason i dont think i will like band is for 1 i dont like it now and for 2 i hate spending a period pushing buttons (yes thats my definition of a instrument something that you push a button on and put air into and it makes a sound) I love cooking so much and today all these kids from electives at the highschool came and visited our class and thats what i just knew would fit me perfectly does anyone have any advice to telling my mom that i really doubt i will like high school band as pushing buttons is just not my thing. Also should i give it a try in high school (band) thanks for the advice you all rock

Electives - what are your requirements for taking them for graduation?

For example: My friends' high school requires a business/etc, creative, and lingual electives for graduation. Band would fall under creative. I'm not sure where cooking would fall under. Anywho, I'd take the courses that allow you to recieve the credits you're going to need. (If cooking > band, explain this to your mom. Explain that cooking gives you the credits, and its something you want to do.)

My school doesn't have electives until junior year. (I'm a freshman.)

I say try band. Try it with an open mind.
I absolutly LOVED my freshman year in band.
It...has changed my life forever.

But that's coming from a band geek :]

It's important to get the important classes done first. Don't take any study halls until you're a junior or a senior.

At our high school you have to take a year of the Art which band falls in place in there but i would rather take a painting class or something like that... you get 2 electives your Freshmen/Sophmore year then 4 elective Senior/Junior year on top of that you have to take a semester of health and a year of PE. I just dont know I tryed to tell her that and she said shes not letting me quit band she is making my life in her way and i dont like it my brother got grounded for a month when he quit band because it wasnt in my moms plans it just drives me crazy that she has decided to take my life into her hands

I don't know what to tell you to tell her, sounds like she's not backing down.

But I think the choice should be 100% up to YOU! The classes you take in High School should be classes that you will enjoy and that will be relevant to your college/university career.
What is band going to do for you? IMHO--nothing! So tell you could try to tell your mom that taking band will NOT benefit you in the least and that you will probably get a bad mark in it because you hate it and that will lower your average.

I always had my mom help me pick in courses in grade 9 & 10, but then in grade 11 & 12 was the time that I had to really pick classes that I would need for university.

I dunno if your HS is the same, but in mine, if you didn't take the grade 9 class, you couldn't take the grade 10 class, and if you wanted to you'd have to take the grade 9 class first semester of grade 10 and then the grade 10 class in 2nd semester.

anyways, hope all works out. I think that the decision should be 100% up to you, your mom can help you out and have input, but in the end you should be taking classes you would enjoy and excel in

My school only has electives in Grade 10, 11 and 12.
Next year I'm taking grade 11 History (I can take it in grade 10) and probably Visual Arts. I might take Spanish instead.
French is a required course for me because I'm in French Immersion. I think I'm doing enriched French next year.
I wanted to take Culinary Tech like you, but because I want to get a grade 11 required course out of the way, I'm not doing it.

You should do what YOU WANT. Because that is what will make you happy in the end.

i'm in the band this year in high school and i absolutley love it!!!
It's amazing!
i've made tons of new friends and its just an amazing experience!
marching season for me is so much fun but it is a lot of work.
i would give band a try next year to see what its like and if you dont like it you can just drop out and do something else
but that's just my opinion.
But it's your choice and whatever makes you happy you should go for it.
i hope i helped a little bit :D

I have been taking band since 5th grade. I'm going to be a junior next year, and I'm taking both band classes my school offers. I am also in marching band. I hated band in middle school. I came to high school with an opened mind about and fell in love with it. I am also taking Spanish 3 next year as an elective. I have been taking Spanish for 2 years now.

It really should be up to you. Can you sign up for band, try it, then drop the class and sign up for something else?

I alway pick electives that i like. I already got all of the nessisary ones done...besides my language.

I picked my electives to be Spanish 2 and 1 semester of fashion design and one of foods.

I'll be a junior...

Freshman year take the required stuff...like pe and health...art maybe...but you don't want to be taking pe junior or senior year.

I picked the Electives that I wanted. I only have two so far I think. A music class and a radio class. Both can actually help me a lot to be a radio DJ when I graduate out of HS.
