Hi!! We're new members at BCV--so exciting!:D Here's our dilemma: We bought 350 pts for our family of 7 (obviously, for a number of years, we will need 2 BR accomodations). Now we're wondering if we need more points? We love family vacations, & at 350, we can comfortably do 1 a year. Is this going to be enough, or do we want more. I know that ultimately no one can really answer this but us, but I was hoping for some well-grounded feedback from those more experienced! Are we just feeling competitive b/c of the April 30 deadline for the current incentive, or is it legitimate for us to be thinking we should take advantage now?

The other thought we've had is we're hoping to do HH next yr.--Do we add-on there for the variety & 11 mo. window or get more pts where we are?

Sorry for all the ?'s--We've been mulling this over & over & finally decided to turn to the "family" for help!

Welcome Home!!... and whoa. Don't worry about the incentive disappearing, you can always look into a resale add-on points at HH or OKW for a lot less money... I think you should try out the 350 for now rather than rushing to buy more because of Disney deadlines...

JMHO, YMMV

Paul

Congratulations and Welcome Home!

I'd also advise you to resist "deadline-itis". We love Disney, but we also like to vacation in other places as well. Do you want to spend all of your vacation time and $$ at WDW, VB or HHI? Keep in mind that there will be annual dues on those points, too.

I have to keep reminding myself of both those things, because when you read this board, it's hard, very hard, not to want more and more points! Lots of people post that you can NEVER have enough points, but we have 250 and think it is just right for us.

As Paul recommends, try it out and see how it goes for you. 350 points can be stretched to go a long way! Remember, there is an active resale market so you don't HAVE to worry about those incentives.

Enjoy your family trips!

You made a big investment in 350 points (unless you hit the big lottery last week.)

I would avoid the marketing pressure and enjoy. In addition to the reslae market yo can always rent points if there is a time when you just have to add a vacation

We're a family of 5 plus an au pair. We initially bought 270 at BWV in '98. That worked well until this past year when we "got the bug" to go again. So, we just purchased a resale at OKW for another 232.

I say try it and see. If you find yourselves in a constant state of borrowing, then you may want to do a resale for those additional points.

It is a personal decision as to whether you want to add-on or not. I will suggest that, if you would like to stay at HH regularly and during the summer months, you definitely add-on there. My understanding is that it is difficult to get reservations during the summer months without the home resort advantage at HHI. We did get a week this year the last week in August at the 6 month mark but it appears to be a fluke....

Congratulations and welcome home! If it were me, I wouldn't worry about beating the April 30 deadline to add on. If you are going to add on at one of the more established resorts, you have the option of resale, etc. See how your family does with your 350 points, and then do a careful consideration of your FUTURE vacation needs and habits. Keep in mind that there are two more DVC resorts due to come on line over the next few years, BCV will likely remain available for a few months, and every month you wait will likely save you dues on those points that can be used for your add on. JMO. Good luck!

Welcome Home. I would say the same. Try it first. We started with 270. We have added 3 times and now have 600. You begin to wonder how to go several times a year on the points you have, and before you know it you've added on again. We wanted to have it all paid for so at retirement it's "FREE". LOL. No, but really, it feels free after it is paid for. Just wish we didn't have those yealy dues, then it really would be free!!!

I would stick with what you have for now and see how you use them for a couple of years before jumping into more points. There will be other DVC properties coming along over the next few years, and there is also the resale market.

In 1997, DH and I bought 200 points at OKW. We have worked well with that until this year, when we decided to add on. We are currently looking for a 200 point add on, preferably at OKW or maybe BWV. Remember, you can bank and borrow, so your 350 points is ultimately worth 1050, if you use last year's, this year's , and next year's.

Their appears to be a lot of "cons" in this thread.

But, if you search other threads titled "What you wished you would have done differently with DVC?", you will find a lot of "I wish I would have bought more points" and "I wish I would have bought sooner" responses.

If you can afford it, I would say buy a few extra points they always come in handy. ;)

Good Luck....Johnnie

Remember the mantra:
"You can never have enough points. You will always want more." "You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more.""You can never have enough points. You will always want more."

All the responses so far are true. We started with 230 and have added on 2 more times:D , but in my opinion 350 is a good amount for now. If you do choose to add on later you can always get a better deal through re-sale;) , points for all the DVC resorts will always be available:)
Also, if you are planning to go to HH during summer only, you might want to consider adding on there to get the 11 month window.

Thanks for all your replies--I had a feeling I could count on you to give us some sound advice. I am definitely feeling more relaxed now (although, I had to quite reading that "mantra" one--LOL!). I think it is just so easy to get caught up in the excitement of owning that we don't know when to quite. Maybe I need some sort of 12-step program!! Seriously, though, I think we will get the hang of stretching our points & see how it goes. I'll just bet we will look into a resale within the next year or so (especially if we keep getting good tax returns!)

Keep your fingers crossed for us that we can get a ressie at HH for next summer at the 7 mo window so that we can try it out & decide if that will become a vacation priority for us! Thanks again for your input!!;)
