I'm so happy to read that you want an adult cat!! My sister (who BTW is also named Michelle) only takes adult cats because they really NEEEED you.
Some of the best advice has been given already. I have two male cats and two female cats. Female cats can be very affectionate also, but they are WORKERS first. Like human women, they have THINGS to do. The boys... well, they are just lumps of love. I remember when I first got Rambo, my FIRST boy, I asked a friend who had 5 cats how are boys? She said the word I still agree with 19 years later... they are USELESS!
Meaning they are put on this earth just to eat and love!! That's the kind of useless I can live with!
I have a Littermaid and I LOVE it!! With 4 cats it's a necessity! I still keep the filtered covered one just in case but my cats, and most cats will NOT get into a dirty litter box and that's next to impossible with that many cats. The Littermaid spooked the heck out them at first but after awhile they adjusted.
The spraying disappears after they're neutered. Lots of shelter cats are already neutered or you can ask that they be neutered before taking him home. They usually charge less that way, also.
Max was my first adult adoptee and he is the best animal I've EVER had. Take your time and let them choose YOU. That's what they do! After all they own us, we don't own them!
