I need to replace my stove and range hood. Our refrigerator and dishwasher are off white (bisque). We will probably look at selling the house within 5 years and the fridge and dishwasher are relatively new. Knowing that most people are looking for stainless steel appliances I thought I should replace the stove and range hood in stainless and that would be one less thing a potential buyer would need to replace. DH thinks it would be better to have everything matching in bisque.

Should I keep everything matching or go for the stainless steel?????

hmmm. Tough. If you have no intention of replacing all the appliances before you sell then I would just aim at matching the color.

I would pick what you would like to live with for the next 5 years.

I would suggest that you go with matching. Personally, I would look at the kitchen itself and not the appliances. I would replace appliances with what I want so what you have wouldn't really be too much of a factor. But having them mismatched might be the one thing that sort of pushes me into the not wanting it area. Replacing things when I can afford it versus getting it mismatched. When you buy a new home you want to show it off. you don't really want to show off mismatched kitchen appliances. Does that make sense?

Actually my thought was if someone wanted stainless that would be one less appliance they would have to replace. I can see both sides of the argument and was just wondering what the best would be for resale purposes. The only 2 things I must have in this new stove is self cleaning and convection.

I would go for matching.

Although...personally I prefer stainless.

And - FWIW - we replaced an 18 year old fridge last year with stainless and still have bisque stove and dishwasher. The plan is when stove and dishwasher need to be replaced we'll get stainless. Right now - we have bigger $$ priorities (kitchen floor and DD's college) so I don't want to replace appliances that are working just fine.

You can't predict what your buyers want. They may be OK with bisque. They may be OK with stainless. They may prefer black. They may prefer white.

However...if I was buying a house - I would be theoretically deducting for appliances if they weren't matching. (Eventhough I would probably replace them anyway.)

I would go for matching, unless you think the other appliances will need replacing within the five years.

Will stainless be popular in five years?

Or will there be a new trend?

I think Stainless and White/ bisque are both fairly safe choices, so either way can work. Also, mixing white and stainless is not awful, depending on kitchen size and layout.

What do you want to live with for five years is most important.

What does the rest of your kitchen look like? Do you have formica or granite? Do you have Home Depot or custom cabinetry?

Nowadays stainless does not equal quality. You can now get low end construction grade SS appliances. It is really no better than the blah garbage put in most apartment buildings.

I would go with the stove that YOU like if you are dealing in an already dated kitchen. My guess is bisque = dated low end kitchen so don't worry about resale since someone is probably going to gut it anyway.

Since this is the only item you need to replace, definitely go with matching items.

Appliances put in new for the sale would be a huge, huge selling point; however, a five-year old stove/hood is just average. It won't be a plus or a minus for resale.

If you needed to replace everything AND were going to sell tomorrow, I'd say go with stainless steel. That seems to be the "default position" these days; that is, most people like it. However, plenty of people (like me) think stainless steel looks cold and uninviting.

Regardless of what you and I may prefer personally, lots of people spend every penny they have to get into the house and have nothing left for improvements. Most people would rather have a full matching set of their second-choice item . . . rather than one mismatched piece of what they really want. I think that mismatched appliances would be a no-go for many buyers.

To argue the other side . . most dishwashers come with multiple panels inside the door. If you open yours up, you may find panels that can be "flipped" for this or that color. Of course, I mean that you may be able to change your bisque dishwasher to stainless steel literally for free. Or you may be able to buy a dishwasher panel in stainless steel.

However, that still leaves you with a mis-matched refrigerator. And I am absolutely certain that most people would find mismatched to be the worst of all possibilities.

Counter top is Corian and cabinets were refaced about 4 years ago. Fridge is about 4 years old and dishwasher is about 6 years old.

If you have room, I would consider an over the range microwave instead of the vent hood. It saves a ton of space on your countertop.

I can't do this because there are cabinets over the stove which I really need.

Yes, it's not always possible. I, too, wanted a microwave above my stove . . . but it wasn't possible -- well, it wasn't possible without changing the cabinets above the stove, and since you can't change just those cabinets, it would've been too expensive.

If I were replacing the cabinets, I would've planned for the microwave over the stove.

Just so you know. We had a house built for us over five years ago. I chose black for my ovens, stove and dishwasher (which can with the house). When it came time to buy a refrigerator, we ended up with a stainless steel, so it doesn't match the rest of the kitchen. So some people do live with non-matching appliances. I don't even think about the fact that they don't match....maybe because the sides, one of which shows, is black too?

Bisque is an unusual color. I don't know how hard it will be to find. If you can't find one you like, you might think about going black rather than stainless.

While the space savings is good, the vent in most OTR microwaves are nearly useless. I just replaced one with a real vent hood, the difference is night and day.

Our kitchen remodel is starting in a couple of weeks and one of the things I am MOST excited about is getting rid of my OTR microwace. Hate that thing. It's just too in my face, plus I use it for just heating up vegetable mostly. Such a waste.
