Leaving on the "Wonder" on 4/14 and I want to set up DS-10 for pin trading on the ship. How should I start--go to the Disney Store or where?

THANKS!

You can start by getting some pins at the Disney store or you can check here or on ebay for some rack pins that are not to costly. They pin trade every night form 7.30 to 8.30 on the cruise in the main lobby and most cast memebers have on laynards. Your son can ask to see someones laynard and check it out . He should then ask to trade or say Thank you but I don't see anything I want to trade. He can trade one pin for one pin on the cast laynards. I don't belive the store carries laynards but you can get them on the ship. Any other questions plase feel free to ask. Have fun and a great cruise.

Newbie questions (you'll tell just how "wet" behind the ears I am when you see them!)

1 - Rack pins, I'm assuming means just the regular pins you can pick up at anytime in any of the parks, versus the limited or series edition pins?

2 - Knowing the limited editions are much more in demand, how many rack pins should one usually offer in exchange for a limited (if the party you're trading with wants the rack pins you have). I know the difference dollar per dollar, but does that matter when trying to get a LE pin?

3 - How many LE pins does one usually buy when at the parks? We've been giving money to friends that have been going to Disney the past couple of months and we stress that they buy us two of everything they get - is that enough? What's the standard amount of what to buy?

4 - Is buying off e-bay worth it? We just bought a Japan Dis pin the other night, which with S/H came out to about $15.00. Of course, the pin was probably only worth $6.50, but it was from Japan! Did we get suckered or should one pay based on how badly one wants a pin from a park out of the country?

5 - Last question has to do with this discussion board - what does "bump" mean??

I know, I sound like I'm dumb, but I'm not. I'm just trying to get the hang of this trading thing. I have a feeling my DH and I have spend WAY more than we needed to on a couple of pins, but then again, we're glad we have them! Any thoughts or suggestions?? They'd be greatly appreciated!

yup

This really depends on what the other person wants. It's very variable! Also, rack pins do become retired and are then more scarce, while some LEs languish on the shelf for months.

Since you never really know what pin is going to be popular, I would say that if you personally like the pin, you might want to pick up an extra for trade. Most LE pin purchases are limited to two per person.

Again, if you love the pin, then don't worry about it! I don't often buy on ebay though; I think it's more fun to trade. I don't think you can really think of this hobby in terms of "worth it" since we would all have a lot more money if we didn't collect pins..lol!

Well, it looks like you have a pretty good handle on things. :)

Yes, "rack pins" means the open edition pins as opposed to the limited edition pins. But don't think that a pin being an LE is automatically in high demand and a rack pin is in low demand. Black Heritage Month 2001 is an LE 1000 but not in high demand. DW and I have had a couple in our trader book for over a year and haven't moved. I'm tempted to put them on lanyards next time I'm in WDW. Also, rack pins can be highly sought after, such as Stinky Pete from Toy Story II. That was a rack pin but retired and in high demand. I don't think the comparability in price matters much. If it did, then I should be able to trade the Black Heritage Month pin for a Wet Paint, and that's not going to happen. :D

eBay can be worth it. sometimes you can find a deal on a group of traders for relatively cheap. As for the Japan pins, think of it like this: it would cost you a lot more than $15 to fly to Japan to buy the pin. And if you feel like you paid too much, it's like the pin karma Steve talks about a lot -- it will all equal out when you get a really hot pin at a really good price or in a trade.

I'm going to redirect this over to the main Collectors board. There's a lot more traffic there and plenty of people to disagree with me over what I said about LEs and rack pins. :D

Yes, buying off of Ebay to begin your trading experience is worth it if you can find a seller who is seller a lot of rack pins for a decent price. Prior to my recent WDW visit, I purchased a lot of 10 pins, using "Buy it Now" for $32.99. With the S&H each pin cost me $3.64 which is lots less than Disney Store pins at $5 and Rack pins at WDW at $6.50. I had so much fun trading with the CMs and I was able to trade for a lot of very nice rack pins. Remember now that WDW has started something new - there are special CM only pins that you can only obtain by trading with a CM. I was able to get 2 of these pins last week from CMs and did not even know what I had at the time. It was only later in the week that I heard about these "special" pins and believe me the collectors out there are hot on those pins.

Thanks for all the input! We got a very nice e-mail back from the young lady selling the pin from Japan. I'm hoping to purchase more from her in the future, since I thought her price was pretty fair, in comparison to others on e-bay. We've been trying to buy pins directly from friends who've been going to Dis. It's kind of a crap shoot, because not wanting to infringe on their Dis time, we just told them to buy two of any LE's they saw and any other pins they liked. But, we've actually done pretty well, we got a couple of cute rack pins, couple LE's and a few complete sets of movie rack pins.

For those who might not know (though you probably do!), there's a WDW purchasing phone service where you are suppose to be able buy just about anything you saw in the parks. The exclusion to that is of course LE's, but I've been able to purchase new rack pin releases, the new snow globe pins and other open editions through them. I go to the dizpins website to get the new releases of the open edition pins and then fax them a list of what I'd like to purchase, asking if they have them in stock. Someone usually calls me back within a few hours and lets me know what they have. You can then order them and get them in about 10 days of ordering. Also, they'll let you order backorder pins. We wanted the snowglobe pins, which were backordered for almost 2 months. Because we were willing to wait, we not only got the complete set, but also a duplicate set to trade (anyone interested??). Their number is 407.363.6200 and they're fax is 407.363.4918.

Thanks again for the pin trading tips. Happy hunting!
