Need advice and tips..for day trip to NYC this Sat.

BRYANT PARK!! They do the cutest holiday fair. Pricey but very artsy stuff. It's my favorite holiday thing in the city. Well one of my favorites. And there is a free skating rink there.

We are going in on Sunday to do downtown though- a nostalgic trip for us lunch with the cousins where my Grandma used to take us all. Won't be crowded. But I am hoping to hit up Bryant Park.

All the other tips mentioned are good ones. Have a great time! Really just walking around 5th or Madison is fun during the holiday season. Oh and there is the "farmer's Market" in Grand Central Station that helps me fill my Penzey addiction.

Oh and cupcakes! Our favorite is Billy's on 9th ave near 22nd? I think. We are definitely stopping there on Sunday!

I like Top of the Rock more than the Empire State building now.
And Janey I think you mean Bloomingdales not Barneys. If you head down there get a Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity. But I am guessing that'll be packed this weekend.

Nope, I meant Barney's at 61 and Madison!

Also, the Penzeys stall in Grand Central market has been closed for a few months now.

Get back to the subway inside Penn Station and take the C uptown to Columbus Circle. Walk east a few blocks to Fifth Avenue (stop at FAO Schwartz and/or Apple store on the way) (also if you're fast walkers and are interested, walk really far east to Barneys on 3rd ave for their windows (and Dylan's candy bar right across the street), then walk back to Fifth) and just start walking slowly downtown. You will hit all the shops, giant Hollister store, windows at Saks, American Girl, Uniqlo flagship store, Rockefellar Plaza, etc. Eventually, get back down to 42nd Street and head a little west to get back to Port Authority.

Hence the poster assumed you meant Bloomie's. As Bloomie's is not only on the original ave. not Mad., but also on 59th and close to the most expensive crap candy shop in the land (the My Dad is Rich Bar) and you'd be below Barney's on the weirdly backwards, circuitous path you were sending people on. And just out of curiosity, why specifically the C?

We're also going in for the day this Saturday!! maybe we'll see you there:rotfl:, along with the other 20 million people.

We go in every year with my in-laws as their Christmas gift (we usually see a show with them). It's us, our two teen boys, and MIL and FIL.

The tree and skaters at rockefeller are a must for us. We always do the windows at Macys, and when the kids were smaller, we'd go in and wait on the line for Santaland, which is totally awesome, and really not too crowded earlier or later in the day (older DS declared when he was 14 that he is not going to be sitting on Santas lap anymore:rotfl:). Bryant park is really cool too. Toys R us is usually on the list as the kids like to get candy from candyland area. No subways for us, we walk everywhere and no one complains, though it is crowded. This year we're seeing the Addams family also, and doing dinner. Usually Starbucks is a stop on the way back to the train. It's tradition for us. My mother in law says every year that this is the best gift she gets, as she doesn't need anything, just time with us.

Gee Cornflake, thanks for explicitly acknowleding my mistake when I thought my allusion to it by simply making the correction was enough.

Let me guess what line of work you're in in NYC;).

Oh, and the C, because I like that it takes you to Columbus Circle and then you can walk east, cutting across the bottom of the park west to east, in close proximity to Apple, FAO, and the other places I mentioned, before you start downtown.

Your mileage may vary. I gather from some other posters' comments you are quite chuffed with your city knowledge. Relax, have a cream soda, it's just an anonymous message board!:santa:

I thought you meant you'd meant Barney's originally.

I meant why the C specifically as there are 5 or 6 trains one can take from Penn Station to Columbus Circle.

Yes, I got the route. I don't get the route but I got the route. I'm not chuffed with my knowledge. I sometimes am a bit baffled when people who don't have much seem inclined to provide some under the guise of having plenty - other people post other stuff all the time, it's a message board. I didn't comment on your post until now. I also don't go around answering questions about Houston.

Hi - Glad I could help! And that you had a good time! :)

I don't know that the view would be so different, except that you could see the Empire State from there, heh; it's a little more central and up but I couldn't say for sure, I've never been to the Rock Center thing.

The Empire State is more than just the view - the Twin Towers was higher and all the way down so the view was entirely up and of the Statue - it's the building, the whole thing of it. It's NY. ;)

Java - There's a market just like the Bryant park one set up in Union Square now for the holidays, if you're only going to be downtown. And if you're going over to Chelsea for cupcakes be aware they opened a Doughnut Plant storefront there. It's right under the Hotel Chelsea, on 23rd between 7th and 8th. If you've never had Doughnut Plant doughnuts, GO THERE. If you have, I do not need to convince you.

They're INSANE. The most amazing doughnuts you've ever had. They elevate doughnuttery to an art form. Seriously.

:banana:WOOHOO! Thanks for that Cornflake. We are big donut lovers here and have never been to Doughnut Plant. Heard of it though and now that's our plan after our big Eastern Block lunch!:rotfl2:

We did the tourist day trip to NYC a few weeks ago and while I have been to NYC many times, I had never done the Empire State building or Top of the Rock before. So, we tried Top of the Rock. It was cool, but overpriced, IMO. I can say I did it, but I don't ever need to do it again. If you have never been to the top of a tall building, maybe it is worth it. Otherwise, I'd skip it!! Just walk around, see the sights, do some shipping, enjoy the hustle and bustle, and then get outta there! That's how I like to "do" New York!
